If “Guest” is an ordinary account listed under Settings > Accounts > Other users, expand it, select Remove beside Account and data, and confirm. This removes that Windows profile and its data from the device, but it does not delete the person’s Microsoft account. If it is Windows’ built-in Guest account, disabling it is the safer course; Microsoft Q&A community guidance recommends disabling that account rather than trying to remove it.
First identify which Guest account you have
“Guest” can mean an ordinary Windows profile whose name happens to be Guest, or Windows’ built-in Guest account. The name alone does not tell you which one it is. Check where the account appears before choosing an action:
- Listed under Other users: Treat it as an ordinary additional profile and use Settings to remove it.
- Identified as the built-in Guest account, or resistant to ordinary removal: Disable it rather than forcing deletion. The specific Windows 11 recommendation comes from a Microsoft Q&A community response, not a formal Windows 11 support article.
Microsoft’s standard removal instructions cover accounts under Other users. Family accounts and work or school connections appear in separate Settings areas and should not be treated as though they were ordinary extra profiles. Microsoft’s account-management guidance distinguishes those areas.
Remove an ordinary account named Guest
- Sign in with an administrator account other than the one you plan to remove, if possible.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Other users.
- Expand the account you want to remove.
- Before proceeding, copy any files the person needs to keep. Removing the account removes its data from this device.
- Beside Account and data, select Remove, then confirm the prompt.
Microsoft states that this action “removes their sign-in information and data from the device.” It removes the Windows profile on this PC; it does not delete the person’s online Microsoft account.

Disable the built-in Guest account
If the entry is the built-in Guest account, use disabling rather than trying to delete it through the ordinary profile workflow. A Microsoft Q&A response recommends this command:
net user guest /active:no
Run it from an administrator account in an administrative command prompt or terminal. Use the exact account name shown on the PC: if it was renamed or localized, guest may not be the account’s actual name. Microsoft’s net user command reference documents /active:no to deactivate an account and /delete to delete one; these are different operations, and the reference lists Windows 11 as supported.

Disabling leaves the account present but inactive; it is not deletion. Microsoft Learn also describes the Guest account as disabled by default in Active Directory/server documentation and advises leaving it disabled unless needed. That server-focused page does not establish identical behavior for every Windows 11 edition or managed PC. Read Microsoft’s Active Directory account guidance for that scoped context.

Do not use /delete as a substitute for deactivation: it requests account deletion, while /active:no disables access. Likewise, disconnecting a work or school account is not the same as deleting a Windows user profile. The researched removal guidance does not specify what happens if you try to remove the account currently signed in or the PC’s only administrator, so avoid relying on this procedure for those situations.
