Google announced native vertical tabs for Chrome on April 7, 2026. The built-in feature moves tabs from the top of the browser window to a side panel, where full page titles and tab groups are easier to see. To try it, right-click an empty area of the tab strip and select Show Tabs Vertically. Availability varies by region, so the option may not appear for everyone yet.
How to turn on vertical tabs in Chrome
The quickest route is through the tab strip. Google Chrome Help also documents Settings and menu options; labels or routes may differ across versions.
- From the tab strip: Right-click an empty area of the strip and choose Show Tabs Vertically.
- From Settings: Open Settings, choose Appearance, then select Vertical under Tab position.
- From Chrome’s menu: Choose More > More Tools > Show Tabs Vertically.
- On Mac: Open the View menu and choose Show Tabs Vertically.
Chrome Help also lists the vertical-tabs option in the context menu when you right-click a tab. See Google’s Chrome tab-management instructions for the documented controls.
What changes when tabs move to the side?
The webpages themselves do not change; only the placement of the tab strip does. Google says the side layout lets people read full page titles, manage tab groups, and regain vertical screen space. Product Managers Alex Tsu and Jess Carpenter described the intended benefit this way: “By moving your tabs to the side of your browser window, you can read full page titles and manage tab groups with ease — even when your tab count hits double digits.”

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Those are Google’s stated interface benefits, not measured results. The official announcement and documentation do not publish a productivity, tab-finding-speed, or adoption measurement. The practical trade-off is whether a side strip is more useful to you than the familiar top row.
Resize or collapse the vertical tab strip
Chrome Help says you can resize the vertical strip to suit the browser window. In collapsed view, hover over a tab to reveal its full page title, or hover over a tab group to see its name. These controls let you keep the side layout compact while retaining access to identifying information.

Google’s current Chrome feature page says availability varies by region. If the option is missing, check the tab-strip context menu and Settings > Appearance > Tab position. The available official information does not establish other specific causes, so an absent control alone does not show that your installation is broken.
