To update Chrome, open More > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on that page; select Relaunch if it appears to install an available update. If Relaunch is absent, Google says Chrome is up to date at that check.
Update Chrome on a Windows 11 PC
- Open Google Chrome.
- Select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select Help > About Google Chrome.
- Wait for Chrome to check for updates. The installed version appears beneath the Google Chrome heading.
- If Relaunch appears, save any work in progress and select it. Chrome will restart to apply the update.
Chrome normally downloads updates in the background and applies them when you close and reopen the browser. If you do not see Relaunch, Google says Chrome is already up to date at that check.
Update Chrome on a Mac
- Open Chrome and select More > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Wait for Chrome to check for updates.
- Select Relaunch if it appears. If it does not, Google says Chrome is up to date at that check.
If Chrome is installed in the Applications folder, the About Google Chrome page also lets you choose Automatically update Chrome for all users on that computer.
Check which Chrome version is installed
Open More > Help > About Google Chrome. The version number appears beneath the Google Chrome heading, and opening the page triggers an update check. Because a single latest-version number is not provided for every channel, installation, or rollout state, check the version shown on your own device rather than relying on a number from an older article. Google’s Chrome update instructions explain this check.

What happens when you relaunch Chrome?
Chrome saves and reopens regular tabs and windows after restarting, but Incognito windows do not reopen. Save work in progress before selecting Relaunch. If you choose Not now, Google says the update applies the next time Chrome restarts. Google Chrome Help documents this behavior.

- Use Google’s reinstall instructions if files may be missing. Uninstall and reinstall Chrome using Google’s official guidance. If the usual reinstall path fails, Google says Windows users can try the standalone installer; Mac users can download Google Software Update again.
If Windows says Chrome is no longer supported even though the operating system meets the requirements, Google advises checking whether Chrome is set to run in Compatibility Mode and turning that setting off. For further steps, see Google’s troubleshooting guide for Chrome update problems.

Google says Chrome on Windows and macOS uses GoogleUpdater to check regularly for new browser updates and install them when available, including security patches. In its description of update checks, Google says the updater sends the release channel, basic hardware information, the current Chrome version and how long it has been installed, and whether Chrome or the Chrome Apps Launcher was recently used. See Google’s explanation of data handling during Chrome installation and updates for details.
