You do not need AirPods Pro 3 to use Apple’s Live Translation. Apple’s current compatibility list includes AirPods Pro 2 and several other models, but the feature also requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 26 or later and Apple Intelligence enabled. Here’s what works, which languages are supported, and how to start a conversation.
Which AirPods work with Live Translation?
Apple’s current guide lists these compatible models:
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
- AirPods 5, including both models
- AirPods Pro 2
- AirPods Pro 3
- AirPods Max 2
AirPods Pro 3 was introduced alongside Live Translation in September 2025, but it is not a requirement. Apple’s launch announcement named AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2 and later; its current guide also lists AirPods 5 and AirPods Max 2. What iPhone and software do you need?
Compatible earbuds alone are not enough. Apple requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on, the Apple Translate app, and the latest firmware for the AirPods. You also need to download the language models for the two languages you plan to use. Apple says the models are downloaded and translation processing happens on the iPhone, where conversation data remains private. Feature availability can vary by region and language; Apple does not establish a complete country-by-country availability list in the cited support material.

Which languages does Live Translation support?
Apple’s current list has ten language entries, including specified regional variants:
- English (US and UK)
- French (France)
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Spanish (Spain)
- Mandarin Chinese (simplified)
- Mandarin Chinese (traditional)
This is broader than the five languages Apple named at launch in 2025. The launch announcement said Italian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese would follow by the end of that year; the current Apple Support language list includes those languages and Mandarin Chinese (traditional). The listed variants do not establish support for every dialect or locale.

How does a translated conversation work?
Live Translation is designed for an in-person, two-way conversation. You hear the other person’s translated speech through your AirPods. You speak normally, while the iPhone Translate app can show a transcript or play your translated response through its speaker. If the other person also has supported AirPods, they can hear your response through their own earbuds after setting up and starting Live Translation.
How to set up and start Live Translation
- Connect your compatible AirPods to an eligible iPhone and make sure the phone and AirPods have the required software and firmware.
- Download the language the other person will speak and the language you want to translate into.
- Open Apple’s Translate app and select Live.
- Choose the speaker’s language and the language you want to hear.
- Start Live Translation from Translate. Apple also lists starting it with an iPhone Action button configured for Translate, by holding both AirPods stems on supported models, by asking Siri, or during a Phone or FaceTime call.
Incoming translated dialogue plays through your AirPods and appears on the iPhone. For your reply, the phone can display translated text or play the translation aloud. In a noisy setting, Apple advises moving the iPhone closer to the other speaker; its guide says the iPhone microphones can be used alongside the AirPods microphones. This is Apple’s guidance, not a guarantee of performance in every environment.

Should you upgrade to AirPods Pro 3 for translation?
If your current earbuds are on Apple’s compatibility list and you meet the iPhone, software, language, and regional requirements, you do not need to upgrade just for Live Translation. AirPods Pro 2 owners can use the feature too. If you are comparing an upgrade, first check whether you already have an eligible iPhone, whether both conversation languages are listed, and whether the feature is available where you will use it. Apple’s cited materials do not establish an independent performance comparison among AirPods generations.
