What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The best free app depends on the phones involved and whether you need mutual sharing between adults or parent-managed location sharing for a child. Apple households can use Find My; people already using Google services can share through Google Location Sharing; Family Link is designed for supervised children; and Life360 offers a dedicated family-sharing app with a limited free plan. These are consensual location-sharing tools: the person being located must knowingly participate, and family membership alone does not turn sharing on. Features and plan terms below reflect official documentation checked on October 8, 2026, and may change.
Which free location-sharing app fits your situation?
| Option | Best fit and compatibility | How sharing starts and stops | Free alerts or history | Connectivity and visibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Find My | People in an Apple household using iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. It is an Apple ecosystem option, not a general cross-platform recommendation. | Family Sharing does not automatically share a member’s location. Each person chooses whether to share; Apple says family members receive notice and may choose to share back. A person can stop sharing or turn off location-change notifications. | Apple documents location-change notifications, but the cited support pages do not state a free-tier history or alert allowance. | Location sharing depends on the person enabling it. Review who can see the location and which notifications are active. |
| Google Location Sharing | Chosen contacts who already use Google services, including Maps and other supported Google services. | Off by default; sharing is set separately for each account and device. The sharer chooses recipients and can manage sharing and per-person notifications. | The cited Google documentation does not state a free-tier history or alert allowance. | Requires a Google Account, mobile device, internet access, and device location enabled. Recipients may see the sharer’s name, profile picture, real-time location, battery status, recent places, or travel mode. |
| Google Family Link | Parents or guardians checking the location of a supervised child’s Android or compatible Fitbit device—not a universal adult locator. | A parent sets up and can turn child-location sharing on or off. Family places and location accuracy can be adjusted. | The cited Family Link documentation does not state a free-tier history or alert allowance. | Works best with a mobile data plan. Location may be unavailable if the device is off, offline, or has not been used recently. Managed child-account controls differ from those for a standard adult Google Account. |
| Life360 | Families who want a dedicated location-sharing app and are willing to use its Circle model. | Life360 describes temporary sharing and temporary Circles, so sharing can be limited in duration. | The official product page accessed October 8, 2026 lists two Place Alerts on Free, seven days of location history on Silver, and 30 days on Gold. The history figures are paid-plan features, not Free inclusions. | As with other phone-based sharing, live visibility depends on the device being able to report its location. Plan details may differ by market; the cited Life360 page is localized to Europe. |
For Apple devices, start with Find My rather than adding another app. For a simple share with chosen contacts using Google, consider Google Location Sharing. Choose Family Link when the need is parental supervision of a child’s compatible device. Life360 is the clearest option here when you specifically want a dedicated family app and its listed free Place Alert allowance meets your needs.
Apple Find My: a natural choice for Apple households
Find My combines people-location sharing with finding Apple devices. Apple says it works across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. A Family Sharing group can make family members appear in Find My, but being in the group does not itself start location sharing. Each person decides whether to share their location; Apple’s instructions say a family member receives a notification and can choose to share back. See Apple’s Find My and location-sharing guidance and Apple’s Family Sharing instructions.
Apple also documents location-change notifications. A person can turn off notifications about their location or stop sharing. Before relying on the arrangement, check the people who have access and whether any location notifications are enabled. The cited Apple pages are from Apple’s Ireland support site; screens and instructions can vary with region and operating-system version.

Google Location Sharing: share with selected people
Google Location Sharing is available through Google services including Maps, Messages, Find Hub, Family Link, and Personal Safety. It is off by default and must be enabled for the relevant account and device; having someone in your contacts or family does not automatically give them access. Google lists the prerequisites as a Google Account, a mobile device, an internet connection, and the device’s location setting enabled. Its current instructions are at Google Maps Help: Location Sharing.
A recipient may see the sharer’s name, profile picture, real-time location, and battery status. Google says Maps may also show recent places or travel mode. The map pin is not a guarantee of an exact physical position: in a busy area, Google says it can sometimes resolve to a nearby point of interest instead of the correct spot. Choose recipients deliberately and review sharing and notification settings for each person.

Google Family Link: for parent-managed child accounts
Family Link can show the location of a child’s Android device or compatible Fitbit device after a parent sets up location sharing. Parents can turn the feature on or off, adjust location accuracy, and define family places. It is intended for supervised child accounts, not as a general-purpose way to locate another adult. Google explains the controls at Family Link Help: Find your child’s location.
Location may be unavailable when the child’s device is powered off, disconnected from the internet, or has not been used recently; Google says it works best with a mobile data plan. Google’s privacy guide for children and families describes separate data practices and controls for managed child accounts. Do not assume those accounts have the same settings or autonomy as an adult’s standard Google Account.

Life360: a dedicated app with a limited free plan
Life360’s official page describes a Free Plan that includes two Place Alerts. The same page lists seven days of location history for Silver and 30 days for Gold; those are paid-plan features, not free history. Because the page is localized to Europe and plan terms can vary by market or change over time, check the current terms for your country before choosing based on a specific allowance. See Life360’s plan details.
Life360 also describes temporary sharing and temporary Circles, which can help keep sharing time-limited. Its Bluetooth trackers are for belongings; they are a separate lost-item use case, not a way to locate a person who has not enabled phone location sharing.

Set up sharing with consent and check the important settings
- Agree on the purpose. Tell the person whose location will be shared why it is useful, who will see it, and whether sharing is ongoing or for a limited period. For a supervised child, discuss the arrangement in an age-appropriate way and use the controls provided for that account.
- Choose the matching service. Use Find My for Apple households, Google Location Sharing for selected Google contacts, Family Link for a supervised child, or Life360 if its dedicated app and free-plan limits fit.
- Have the person enable sharing themselves where appropriate. Select the intended recipients rather than assuming a family group or contact list grants access. For Family Link, a parent sets up the child’s location feature.
- Review visibility and alerts. Confirm who can see the location, whether recipients can see battery status or other details, and whether location-change or per-person notifications are enabled. Remove access or stop sharing when it is no longer wanted.
- Check the device before depending on the map. Location services and internet access need to be available for phone-based sharing. Test the setup while both people are available, and remember a map point can be approximate or stale if the device is disconnected or inactive.
What location sharing can—and cannot—tell you
These services show location information made available by a participating account or device; they do not guarantee a person’s exact physical position or safety. A phone that is powered off or offline cannot provide the same live visibility as a connected device. Google specifically warns that a point in a busy area can be a nearby place of interest rather than the correct position. Treat the map as useful context, not proof of where someone is or a promise that help will arrive.
