Apple released macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 on March 25, 2024, with fixes for USB hubs connected to external displays, certain copy-protected Audio Unit plug-ins, and apps that include Java. Apple also documented a security fix for CVE-2024-1580. Sonoma 14.4.1 is a historical release; Apple’s update history now lists later Sonoma versions, including 14.8.4.
What macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 fixes
Apple’s Sonoma update history names three bug-fix categories. The descriptions are specific: they do not establish that every USB hub, audio plug-in, or Java application was affected.
- USB hubs: Hubs connected to external displays may not be recognized. Apple does not say that all hubs failed or recommend replacing one.
- Audio Unit plug-ins: Copy-protected Audio Unit plug-ins designed for professional music apps may not open or pass validation. The note does not describe a general fix for every audio plug-in.
- Java apps: Apps that include Java may quit unexpectedly. Apple does not identify particular Java versions or applications.
Apple’s release notes use “may” for each issue and do not name affected device or app models, so the listed fixes should not be read as a guarantee that every similar problem is resolved.
Security fix: CVE-2024-1580
Apple’s security-content notice for macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 gives the release date as March 25, 2024. It lists CoreMedia and WebRTC entries for CVE-2024-1580 and says processing an image could lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple describes the underlying issue as an out-of-bounds write, addressed with improved input validation. Both entries show the same CVE identifier; the notice does not list them as two separate CVEs. Apple credits Nick Galloway of Google Project Zero.

No. Apple’s current Sonoma update history lists later releases, including macOS Sonoma 14.8.4, so 14.4.1 should be treated as a past release rather than the current Sonoma version. To check which version is installed, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. For available updates, use System Settings > General > Software Update; Apple’s update history provides the version-by-version record.
