Slow pages are not always caused by Chrome: the network, a particular site, or limited device memory can also be responsible. These steps may help identify and resolve the cause, but they are not guaranteed fixes for every device.
1. Update Chrome, then reopen it
An outdated browser can have problems that a later release addresses. Google recommends using the latest Chrome version for speed and security, and says users can check for an update through Google Play. Google’s Chrome update instructions explain that updates may also install automatically.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then Manage apps & device.
- Look for Chrome under available updates and tap Update if offered.
- When the update finishes—or if Chrome is already current—close Chrome and open it again.
Menu labels can vary slightly by Play Store version. Google’s compatibility guidance lists Android 10 and later for Chrome, so Android 12 meets the stated requirement; that does not mean every Android 12 device will perform identically. Check Chrome’s Android requirements.
2. Close inactive tabs and other apps
Many open tabs and several simultaneously running apps can put more pressure on a device’s available memory. Google’s advice is straightforward: “If you open more tabs, Chrome works harder.” Google’s speed guidance for Chrome on Android recommends closing tabs you are not using.

- In Chrome, open the tab switcher and close tabs you no longer need.
- Close other apps you are not using, especially if pages are crashing or failing to load.
- Pause active downloads while testing Chrome.
Try loading the same page again before making more disruptive changes. Closing tabs is a low-risk first step, but remember that a closed tab may not restore its unsaved page state.
3. Find out whether Chrome, the connection, or a website is slow
Compare a few conditions before changing browser data. Google identifies device software or settings, network problems, browser data or memory, and website availability as possible reasons pages may not load properly. Google’s page-loading troubleshooting guide recommends checking the connection and trying the page in Incognito.

- Try another website in Chrome. If that site works but one particular page does not, the issue may be with that website.
- Check Wi-Fi or mobile data. Confirm the device is connected, then try another connection if available. A problem across multiple sites can point to the network, router, or carrier rather than Chrome.
- Try the same page in another browser. If it is slow or unavailable there too, Chrome is less likely to be the cause.
These comparisons help narrow down the cause; they cannot by themselves establish whether a website, router, carrier, or device is at fault.
4. Test Incognito, then clear selected browsing data if it helps
Open the affected page in an Incognito tab. If it works there but remains slow in a regular tab, Google recommends deleting browsing data in regular Chrome. Follow Google’s Android troubleshooting steps. Clearing cached files and cookies may help with loading or formatting problems, but it can also disrupt how some sites remember you.

- In Chrome, tap the three-dot menu and open Delete browsing data. The exact menu wording can vary by Chrome version.
- Select the time range and the specific data types you intend to remove; avoid selecting more than necessary.
- Review the choices, then confirm deletion.
Before clearing cookies, note the trade-offs: some site settings may be removed, and you may need to sign in again. Pages can also load more slowly the first time afterward because content must be downloaded again. Google describes what the available choices remove in its guide to deleting Chrome browsing data on Android. Do not erase all Chrome app storage as a routine first step.
5. Review page preloading, then restart the phone if needed
Choose a preloading setting that suits you
Chrome for Android offers a Preload pages setting. When enabled, Chrome may preload pages it thinks you might visit, which can make browsing feel faster. The best choice depends on your needs; changing the setting is not a guaranteed fix. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu, go to Settings, and look for Preload pages. The setting’s location or available choices may differ by version.

Restart before trying a reinstall
If Chrome is still sluggish after the checks above, restart the phone or tablet and test again. Reinstalling Chrome is a later troubleshooting step, not the first one to try. The effort and diagnostic ratings are practical comparisons, not measured benchmarks. Start with the quick, low-disruption checks; move to deleting data only when the Incognito comparison points toward regular Chrome’s stored browsing data.
