If your iPhone is not tracking steps accurately, first check the step records and data sources in Apple Health, then make sure you carry the phone while walking. If you use an Apple Watch, also verify that Fitness Tracking is enabled for that Watch. Apple does not document a universal reset or recalibration procedure for iPhone-only step counting.

Why is my iPhone not counting my steps?

iPhone built-in sensors capture steps and other walking data. Apple describes mobility metrics as accumulating over time when the phone is in a pocket or worn near the waist, and says carrying an iPhone lets its motion sensors track steps, distance, and flights climbed for the activity summary. That means where the phone is during a walk can affect what it records; no particular carry position guarantees an exact count.

The number shown in Health may also come from more than the iPhone. Health can combine step data from iPhone, Apple Watch, and compatible third-party apps or accessories. When totals look missing or unexpected, check the underlying records and sources before assuming the iPhone sensor has failed. Apple’s iPhone guide to Health data describes the phone’s walking metrics.

Check whether Apple Health has the step records

  1. Open Health and find Steps. Inspect the Steps category and its records for the day when the count seemed wrong.
  2. Compare the records with the summary. If Health has entries but another summary view does not show them as expected, the issue may be how that view presents or aggregates the data rather than a lack of step records.
  3. Identify the source of the entries. In the Steps category, review data sources and their priority. Look for iPhone, Apple Watch, and any compatible app or accessory that may be writing steps. Apple explains how to manage Health data sources in Manage Health data on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

Apple’s description is direct: “The Health app counts your steps, walking and running distances automatically.” That automatic count does not mean every displayed total comes exclusively from the iPhone; Health can consolidate data from supported sources.

Carry your iPhone during the walk

If you want the iPhone itself to capture walking activity, take it with you. A pocket or a position near the waist follows Apple’s description of how iPhone mobility data accumulates. Leaving the phone behind, or carrying it inconsistently from one walk to another, can make its recorded activity differ from what you expect. Apple does not promise exact counts for a specific pocket, belt, or pouch.

For the Fitness activity summary, Apple says the iPhone’s motion sensors track steps, distance, and flights climbed when you carry the phone. See See your activity summary in Fitness on iPhone.

If you use an Apple Watch, check Fitness Tracking

When step or activity data is missing and an Apple Watch is paired, check the Watch’s privacy setting in Health. Apple’s support instructions say to enable Fitness Tracking for that Watch if needed. This check applies to Apple Watch activity data; it is not an iPhone step-count calibration setting. Follow Apple’s Health data management steps to review the Watch’s settings and its contribution to Health.

iPhone-only tracking versus iPhone and Apple Watch

Setup What to check What the documented guidance establishes
iPhone only Carry the iPhone while walking, then inspect Health’s Steps records and data sources. iPhone sensors capture walking data; Apple does not give a numerical step-count accuracy rate or a universal recalibration process for iPhone-only counting.
iPhone with Apple Watch Check Health records and sources, including which device is contributing data, and verify Fitness Tracking for the Watch. Health can consolidate device and compatible app or accessory data. Apple documents the Fitness Tracking check for a paired Watch, but does not claim this setup is inherently more accurate.

Do not use Apple Watch calibration as an iPhone fix

Apple’s calibration instructions concern Apple Watch distance, pace, calorie, Workout, and Activity measurements. They include checking Location Services and Motion Calibration & Distance, then walking or running outdoors at a normal pace for about 20 minutes. Those steps are for Watch measurements; Apple does not document them as a way to recalibrate an iPhone’s standalone step count. Read the scope of the procedure in Calibrate your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy.

What to collect if steps are still missing

If checking the records, sources, carry position, and Watch setting does not explain the problem, note the iPhone model, iOS version, whether an Apple Watch or another app is connected, and which source is writing the step entries. These details help distinguish missing sensor records from unexpected contributions by another source when contacting Apple Support. Apple’s cited guidance does not specify a universal reset sequence for iPhone step counting.
