Press Windows key + X, then press U, then S—one key after another, not all at once. This opens the Quick Link menu and selects Sleep on many Windows 11 PCs. If the sequence does not work, choose Start > Power > Sleep.
Use the keyboard sequence to put Windows 11 to sleep
- Press Windows key + X to open the Quick Link menu.
- Press U to open its shutdown and sign-out options.
- Press S to select Sleep.
The full Win+X, U, S sequence is described in Microsoft-hosted community guidance, rather than on Microsoft’s official keyboard-shortcut list: Microsoft Q&A: Windows sleep shortcut. Microsoft’s official reference confirms that Windows key + X opens the Quick Link menu, but does not document the complete sequence: Keyboard shortcuts in Windows. Menu behavior can vary, so treat the later key presses as a convenient route, not a guaranteed dedicated hotkey.
If the shortcut does not work
Use the visible Start menu route: select Start > Power > Sleep. Microsoft documents this as a way to put the PC into Sleep: Shut down, sleep, or hibernate your PC. This fallback does not require a special keyboard or a dedicated Sleep key.
Set the power button or laptop lid to trigger Sleep
As a separate convenience, many PCs can be configured to enter Sleep when you press the power button, and many laptops can do so when you close the lid. These are device and power-setting options, not keyboard shortcuts; availability depends on the PC and its settings. Follow Microsoft’s instructions under “Change what happens when you press the power button” in its power options guidance.

Sleep versus Hibernate
Sleep is suited to a short break: it uses very little power and resumes faster. Hibernate uses less power than Sleep but takes longer to resume, making it a possible choice for a longer stretch without charging. Hibernate is not available on every PC. Adjust Windows 11 sleep settings
To change when your PC or screen goes to sleep, open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. The available controls can depend on whether you are using a laptop or desktop. Microsoft describes these Windows 11 settings here: Power settings in Windows 11.
