The catch is that Google makes basic assistant tasks free, but gates Gemini Live and some other advanced features behind Google Home Premium. Availability also depends on country, language, device, and rollout access—and once a household switches to Gemini for Home, Google says it cannot switch back to Google Assistant.
What Google announced
Google announced the Google Home Speaker (2026) on June 17, 2026, describing it as its first audio device built for the Gemini for Home voice assistant. The announcement listed a U.S. price of $99.99 and said the speaker would hit shelves June 25, 2026. Those are launch-announcement details, not confirmation of current stock or pricing in other markets. Google’s current product page promotes the speaker’s 360-degree sound and Gemini features but does not establish a price in its captured page text: Google Home.
Google says Gemini for Home can understand natural phrasing, handle multiple requests in one sentence, and accept corrections while a person is speaking. It also announced ten new natural-sounding voices. These are Google’s product claims; no independent listening or assistant-performance test is established here. The announcement is available from Google.
What is free and what requires a subscription?
You do not need Google Home Premium for basic Gemini for Home voice-assistant functions. Google Support lists everyday tasks such as smart-home controls, media search and playback, alarms, timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, and general questions as available at no cost.

The paid tier matters for selected advanced features, not for the entire assistant. Google marks Gemini Live as requiring Google Home Premium; its feature table also places Search camera livestream & history and Home Brief in the Advanced plan column. Google said in an October 1, 2025 launch post that Home Premium plans started at $10 a month and that the subscription was included with Google AI Pro and Ultra at that time. Availability depends on more than buying the speaker
Google says early access to Gemini for Home rolls out to select countries and languages and expands over time. Its support page lists Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Listed languages are Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish. Google notes that availability lists can change, and access also depends on device compatibility and rollout invitation.
For the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant, Google lists the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Hub (1st gen), and Google Home Mini (1st gen), subject to minimum firmware requirements. Older devices and third-party speakers support most features, but not Gemini Live. Check Google’s current supported-country, language, and device information before opting in.

Switching to Gemini for Home is a one-way decision for now
Google says that once a household switches to Gemini for Home, compatible devices use Gemini instead of Google Assistant and the household cannot switch back. That makes early access a meaningful choice rather than a harmless preview toggle: consider whether the supported features and availability suit everyone in the home before accepting the switch.

Google says up to two Google Home Speakers can pair with a Google TV Streamer for spatial surround sound. It is an optional ecosystem feature, not a requirement for using the speaker. Google listed Hazel and Porcelain broadly, with Jade and Berry as U.S.-exclusive color options in its announcement.
