Yes—an iPhone can be targeted without its owner clicking anything. Citizen Lab found high-confidence forensic evidence that two journalists were targeted with Paragon’s Graphite spyware through a zero-click iMessage attack. Apple says the Messages flaw, CVE-2025-43200, was mitigated in iOS 18.3.1, released in February 2025. The case does not mean every iPhone, or everyone who received a spyware warning, was infected.
What happened in the Paragon Graphite case?
In a June 12, 2025 report, Citizen Lab described high-confidence forensic evidence that two journalists were targeted with Paragon’s Graphite spyware. One journalist requested anonymity; the other was Italian journalist Ciro Pellegrino. Citizen Lab linked an iMessage account in device logs to the deployment and described a sophisticated zero-click attack. The organization said responsibility for the targeting had not been established. Citizen Lab’s report
The evidence was not identical for both people. Citizen Lab reported that one journalist’s device was compromised with Graphite in January and early February 2025 while it was running iOS 18.2.1. For Pellegrino, it reported evidence of targeting and an association with an infection attempt. The report also discussed a WhatsApp notification sent to another journalist; that notification is not forensic confirmation that the person’s Android device was infected.
What “zero-click” means
A zero-click attack does not require the target to tap a link or open an attachment. That makes it different from a conventional phishing attempt, although the attacker still needs a vulnerability and a way to deliver malicious content. In this case, Apple’s technical advisory identifies the processing of a maliciously crafted photo or video shared through an iCloud Link as the relevant path.

What was the Messages flaw, and when was it patched?
Apple identified the issue as CVE-2025-43200. Its advisory says a logic issue existed when Messages processed a maliciously crafted photo or video shared via an iCloud Link, and that Apple addressed it with improved checks. Apple also noted a report that the flaw may have been exploited against specific targeted individuals.
Apple released iOS 18.3.1 and iPadOS 18.3.1 on February 10, 2025. The advisory entry describing this Messages issue was added on June 11, 2025. Citizen Lab said Apple told it the attack was mitigated in iOS 18.3.1. Those are historical release details, not a recommendation to install that old version now.

Update to the version offered for your device
As of October 8, 2026, Apple’s release page lists iOS and iPadOS 27.0.1 as the latest versions. The release page changes over time, and the newest compatible update can vary by device. Use the update offered in Settings rather than trying to install a historical release: on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update, then install the latest version available for that device. Does an Apple spyware notification mean your phone was infected?
No. Apple describes its threat notifications as high-confidence alerts that a user may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware. That is serious, but it is not the same thing as a public forensic finding that a particular device was infected. In the Paragon case, Citizen Lab distinguished between evidence of compromise, evidence of targeting or an infection attempt, and a notification without forensic confirmation of infection.

Apple says it does not disclose what triggers these notifications and does not attribute them to a specific attacker or region. A notification therefore does not, by itself, prove that Paragon or Graphite was involved. Apple says it has sent notifications in more than 150 countries since 2021; that figure counts countries, not affected users or attacks. It also says the vast majority of users will never be targeted by mercenary spyware. Apple: About threat notifications and protecting against mercenary spyware
What to do if Apple says you were targeted
- Verify the alert independently. Type account.apple.com into your browser and sign in directly; check for a banner there. Apple says a notification may also appear on the iPhone lock screen, in Settings, or by email to addresses associated with the Apple Account. Do not rely on links in an unexpected message.
- Do not share credentials or install anything because of the alert. Apple says its threat notifications will never ask you to click a link, open a file, install an app or configuration profile, or provide a password or verification code.
- Contact a specialist before making disruptive changes. Apple recommends expert assistance, including Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline. Citizen Lab likewise urges journalists, human-rights defenders, and other civil-society members who receive warnings to take them seriously and seek expert help. Do not wipe or reset a suspected device before consulting specialists: preserving forensic evidence may matter. Access Now Digital Security Helpline
- Keep the device and account protected. Install the latest software offered for the device. Apple also recommends general account and device security practices; specialists can advise on steps appropriate to the person’s circumstances.
Should you turn on Lockdown Mode?
Lockdown Mode is an optional, unusually restrictive protection intended for the small number of people who may be personally targeted by sophisticated digital threats. It is not a guarantee against spyware, and it is not a necessary setting for everyone. Apple recommends updating devices before enabling it and turning it on across all supported devices for complete protection.

What this case does—and does not—establish
- It establishes that Citizen Lab found high-confidence forensic evidence of Graphite targeting on two journalists’ devices and reported an iMessage zero-click attack.
- It establishes that Apple identified a Messages processing flaw involving maliciously crafted media shared via iCloud Link and said it was mitigated in iOS 18.3.1.
- It does not establish that all iPhones were vulnerable in the same way, that every recipient of a spyware warning was infected, or that Apple’s threat notifications identify Paragon as the attacker.
- It does not establish who ordered the journalists’ targeting; Citizen Lab said responsibility had not been established in its report.
