ChatGPT Agent is OpenAI’s general-purpose ChatGPT capability for researching information and taking steps through websites and connected services—not just generating text. Announced on July 17, 2025, it combined website interaction associated with Operator, research synthesis associated with Deep Research, and ChatGPT’s conversational abilities. OpenAI described a virtual computer the agent can use to move between reasoning and action, with users able to steer or take over when needed.
What ChatGPT Agent is and how it works
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Agent on July 17, 2025 as a way to carry out multi-step tasks from a user’s instructions. Its system card describes it as an agentic model in the same family as OpenAI o3, combining the strengths of Deep Research and Operator. Rather than simply returning an answer, the agent can use a virtual computer to gather information and interact with interfaces. OpenAI described several tools it could use:
- Visual browser: interacts with websites through their graphical interfaces.
- Text browser: handles simpler web queries using text-based interaction.
- Terminal: runs tasks in a terminal environment with limited network access.
- Direct API access and connectors: connect to external data sources and applications. OpenAI cited Gmail and GitHub as examples of services connectors could link.
OpenAI’s Help Center says the agent interprets and interacts with pages using screenshots of its virtual browser. The standalone Operator experience was later slated for deprecation as its core virtual-browser functionality was integrated into ChatGPT Agent. What tasks ChatGPT Agent can handle
OpenAI’s launch examples show the range it was designed to cover: researching across sources, creating a slideshow, submitting expenses, updating a financial model, planning a dinner party, benchmarking transit systems, and preparing a client-meeting report and slide deck. These examples are illustrative rather than a guarantee that every task, site, or app will work.
For connected services, the agent may be able to use authenticated information. However, some workflows require the user to take over the browser and log in before the agent can continue. OpenAI also said users could schedule completed tasks to recur, such as producing a weekly metrics report. Availability statements should be read as a dated rollout timeline, not as confirmation of current access, pricing, regional availability, or usage limits.

The launch announcement listed monthly allowances of 400 messages for Pro and 40 for other paid users. How user oversight and safety work
OpenAI described the agent as a system users can interrupt and steer, not as a fully autonomous service. Users can clarify instructions, take over the browser, or stop a task. The company said the agent asks permission before consequential actions and is trained to refuse high-risk tasks such as bank transfers. It also described prompt-injection safeguards, including training, monitoring, and confirmation before consequential actions. OpenAI cautioned that the system can make mistakes. In its system card, OpenAI classified the model as High capability in the Biological and Chemical domain under its Preparedness Framework and said associated safeguards were activated. The same document says OpenAI did not have definitive evidence that the model could meaningfully help a novice create severe biological harm, and characterizes its decision as precautionary. What happens to browser data and connected information
OpenAI’s Help Center explains that chats, browsing history, and browser screenshots remain in conversation history until the user deletes them. It says deleted conversations and associated screenshots are deleted from OpenAI systems within 90 days. The same guidance says passwords or sensitive data entered while the user controls the browser are not captured. OpenAI recommends limiting app access to what is necessary, avoiding sensitive logins where possible, and clearing saved cookies or logging out when appropriate. (ChatGPT Agent Help Center guidance)
OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used for model training by default. Plus and Pro data is handled under the privacy policy, including possible use for improvement if the user has opted in. OpenAI reported a 68.9% score on BrowseComp, which it describes as a benchmark for finding hard-to-locate web information, and said that result was 17.4 percentage points higher than Deep Research. For SpreadsheetBench’s overall soft-restriction score under OSX/LibreOffice, OpenAI reported 35.27% for ChatGPT Agent and 45.54% for ChatGPT Agent with an .xlsx file; the human row in the same table was 71.33%. OpenAI separately reported GPT-4o at 18.35% for that environment and measure. These figures describe that particular evaluation setup and should not be generalized to other spreadsheet tasks or software. (OpenAI’s launch announcement)
OpenAI also described slideshow generation as beta at launch, noting that formatting could be rudimentary and that slides in the viewer could occasionally differ from exported PowerPoint files. Those are launch-era caveats, not evidence of the feature’s current state. (OpenAI’s launch announcement)
