Apple briefly paused four older iOS updates after Telstra in Australia reported that some iPhones running iOS 16.7.13 could not connect to its network, potentially including calls to emergency number 000. Telstra identified the affected models as iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. The reported failure was specific to those devices on Telstra; it was not established as a worldwide outage or as a defect shared by all four updates.
What Apple paused—and what the reports actually identified
Apple released iOS 18.7.4, iOS 16.7.13, iOS 15.8.6, and iOS 12.5.8 on January 26, 2026. Two days later, Telstra said some older Apple devices could not connect to its Australian network. Its notice named iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X running iOS 16.7.13, and warned that the problem could affect calls to 000. Macworld’s contemporaneous report covered Apple’s pause of all four releases.
The distinction matters: Apple paused four releases while investigating, but Telstra’s specific warning linked the connectivity issue to iOS 16.7.13 on those three iPhone models using Telstra. The available reporting does not establish that other carriers or regions experienced the same failure, or that iOS 18.7.4, 15.8.6, and 12.5.8 shared the defect. Telstra’s January 28 notice said it was investigating an issue preventing some older Apple devices from connecting to its network and working with Apple as a priority. Telstra’s support notice is the carrier’s account of the incident.
What affected Telstra customers were told to do
Telstra’s immediate remedy was a carrier settings update, not a phone replacement or a hardware purchase. Its January 29 instructions said to connect over Wi-Fi, check for and accept the update, then confirm the carrier version in Settings.

Telstra said, “Apple has released a carrier settings update to fix this issue.” If the phone does not show a prompt, or the network problem continues, consult Telstra’s current support guidance or contact the carrier rather than assuming that installing a particular iOS version will resolve it.
How the pause ended
The updates did not all return at the same time. Contemporaneous reporting said the other three paused releases resumed while iOS 16.7.13 remained unavailable. Apple released iOS 16.7.14 on February 2, 2026, as a replacement for the 16.7.13 release; Apple’s iOS 16 update history lists 16.7.14 as a bug-fix update. This later release means the original pause should not be described as still applying to all four updates.

What this incident does—and does not—tell iPhone owners
- If you use one of the named iPhones on Telstra: the warning concerned iOS 16.7.13 and included possible loss of access to 000. Follow Telstra’s carrier-settings instructions and current guidance.
- If you use another carrier or region: the cited reports do not establish that you were affected. The incident should not be treated as proof of a general iPhone network outage.
- For the other three paused iOS releases: Apple temporarily paused them during its investigation, but the reported Telstra failure was not specifically attributed to those versions.
