Create a Skill by putting a SKILL.md file in its own directory under ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or .claude/skills/ for a project. Add YAML frontmatter with a name and description, then write the workflow in the Markdown body. Claude Code can discover and use custom Skills automatically when a request matches their descriptions.
Choose where to put a Claude Code Skill
The location determines the Skill’s sharing scope:

Each Skill needs its own directory and a required SKILL.md file. You can add supporting reference documents or scripts in that directory when they are useful.
Create a Skill step by step
- Choose the scope. Use
~/.claude/skills/for a personal Skill, or put a project Skill under.claude/skills/in the repository. - Create a directory for the Skill. For example, a project Skill called
review-prcan live at.claude/skills/review-pr/. - Add
SKILL.md. Put the required YAML frontmatter at the top, followed by the Markdown instructions. - Write a clear description and workflow. Explain what the Skill does and the situations in which Claude should use it. Keep the steps focused and actionable.
- Make supporting files optional and purposeful. Put longer references or helper scripts in separate files, and tell Claude in
SKILL.mdwhen to consult or run them. - Make a matching request in Claude Code. Custom Skills are discovered and used automatically when their descriptions match the task; you do not need to paste the same instructions into every conversation.
Write valid frontmatter and useful instructions
The frontmatter must include name and description. Anthropic’s documentation sets these constraints for the name: no more than 64 characters, only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, and no reserved words anthropic or claude. The description is required, must not be empty, and can be up to 1,024 characters. Use it to state both the Skill’s purpose and when Claude should apply it.

Understand what a Skill is—and what it is not
Claude Code Skills are filesystem-based directories containing instructions, metadata, and optional resources. Anthropic describes their use as staged: metadata supports discovery, the body loads when a Skill is triggered, and supporting resources can be read or executed when needed. The intended distinction is between a reusable workflow and instructions you would otherwise have to copy into each request.
A Skill in Claude Code does not automatically become available in claude.ai or the Claude API. Those products have distinct Skill models; the API uses a workspace-level upload model rather than Claude Code’s local filesystem directories. Anthropic also says its pre-built document Skills for PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and PDF are not available in Claude Code. The overview notes that an open-source Claude API Skill is bundled with Claude Code, which is separate from assuming those document Skills are included.

Review a Skill before using it
Read the entire Skill directory before enabling an unfamiliar third-party Skill—not just its SKILL.md. Instructions, scripts, or other resources can direct Claude to use tools in unexpected ways or expose data. Pay particular attention to behavior outside the Skill’s stated purpose, including unexpected network or file access.
