The viral claim that Apple will replace the iPhone 18’s USB-C port with a MacBook-style magnetic connector is not supported by an attributed leak or an Apple announcement. Apple’s 9 September 2026 announcement confirms USB-C wired charging on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It does not establish the connector specifications for the base iPhone 18.
What Apple has confirmed about iPhone 18 charging
Apple says iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max support wired charging with a USB-C Charge Cable. Its iPhone 18 Pro specifications also describe wired fast charging using a 60W-capable USB-C cable and a USB Power Delivery adapter that supports USB PD 3.1 or later with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS). Apple says the adapter and cable are sold separately, and actual charge times vary.
That fast-charge specification is not a claim that every USB-C cable and adapter will charge at the same rate. It is specific to the Pro models and the compatible equipment Apple describes.
Why the magnetic-port rumor is weak
The rumor stems from a viral video that purports to show an iPhone 18 with a MacBook-style magnetic charging connector. Macworld’s 19 February 2026 report says the clip is an animation and does not list sources. That makes it an unsupported visual, not verified product information.

The rumor may also confuse two different technologies. iPhone MagSafe is wireless charging; MacBook MagSafe is a magnetic wired power connector. An iPhone supporting wireless MagSafe does not mean Apple is replacing its wired USB-C port with a MacBook-style connector.

What EU common-charger rules do—and do not—mean
The European Commission says its common-charger requirements have applied to covered handheld mobile phones since 28 December 2024, with USB-C as the common charging port. The rules also harmonise fast-charging requirements, allow devices to be sold without a charger, and require information for consumers about charging characteristics. The Commission describes the requirement for phones with charging ports; its guidance does not establish that every phone must have a physical charging port.

The Commission estimates the rules could reduce electronic waste by 980 tonnes per year and save consumers at least €250 million annually on unnecessary charger purchases. These are Commission estimates; the current page does not state a year for either figure, so they should not be read as measured results already achieved. Apple’s cited announcement covers iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. It is not a complete specification sheet for every iPhone 18 variant, so it should not be used to say Apple has officially confirmed the base iPhone 18’s connector. The viral video does not fill that gap: it provides no sourced evidence of a switch to a magnetic wired port.

Apple first brought USB-C to iPhone with iPhone 15 in 2023. The Associated Press reported that change and quoted Apple vice president of iPhone product marketing Kaiann Drance saying, “USB-C has become a universally accepted standard so we’re bringing USB-C to iPhone 15.” That history provides context, but the current model-specific evidence is Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement.
