Google Project Astra is a research prototype for a more capable AI assistant—not a standalone product that anyone can download. Google’s vision is an assistant that can take in live audio and video, understand context, remember useful details, and use tools. Some capabilities first explored with Astra have since been incorporated into Gemini Live, while Google says the broader project remains in limited testing.
What is Project Astra?
Google introduced Project Astra at Google I/O on May 14, 2024, as its “vision for the future of AI assistants.” The concept goes beyond answering a typed question: an assistant would perceive a changing environment, follow what a person says about it, recall relevant details, and respond or act in context.
Google’s original technical description covered continuously encoding video frames, combining video and speech into a timeline of events, and caching information so it could be recalled. The first public demonstration was a prototype shown in two continuous takes: one on a Pixel phone and one on prototype glasses. In both, it received a continuous audio-and-video stream and responded in real time. A demonstration of that kind shows the intended interaction, not a released product or proof of general intelligence.
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis described the ambition as an expert AI assistant available through a phone or glasses. That is a direction for development, rather than a promise that a finished assistant with every proposed capability is already available. Google DeepMind’s May 2024 announcement explains the original vision and demonstration.

Is Google Project Astra available?
No. Google DeepMind’s current Project Astra page describes it as a research prototype used by a limited number of trusted testers. The page has a waitlist for people interested in testing, but joining it is not the same as getting immediate access. A demo, a Gemini Live feature, or an Android phone purchase does not grant access to Astra.
Google’s current page describes Astra work on Android phones and prototype glasses. It does not establish a public launch date, retail glasses product, or general consumer sign-up. Availability can change, so the project page is the relevant place to check for a status update. Google DeepMind’s Project Astra page lists its current status and testing information.
What can Astra do, and how has it changed?
Astra’s proposed capabilities center on multimodal interaction: using more than one type of input, such as a camera view and spoken conversation, to respond with context. Google’s current project page lists natural interaction, proactive responses, context-aware dialogue, object highlighting, tool use, personalized reasoning, and multimodal memory. These are capabilities being explored in a prototype, not a guarantee that each works reliably or is available to all users.

From the 2024 demo to a Gemini 2.0 prototype
In a December 11, 2024 update, Google said trusted Android-phone testers had helped inform a newer version built with Gemini 2.0. Google cited improved multilingual dialogue, use of Search, Lens, and Maps tools, better memory, and lower latency. It also said that version had up to 10 minutes of in-session memory. That figure describes the prototype version Google discussed at the time; it is not a current specification or an independently measured performance result. Google said it was expanding trusted testing and that a small group would test prototype glasses. Google’s December 2024 update gives the dated details.

At Google I/O on May 20, 2025, Google presented Gemini as its path toward a universal assistant and said it had integrated capabilities first explored in Astra—including video understanding, screen sharing, and memory—into Gemini Live. The same account mentioned more natural native-audio voice output and computer control. This is Google’s description of product development; it does not establish that every Astra capability is present in every Gemini Live account, region, or device. Google’s May 2025 Gemini update describes that work.
How is Project Astra different from Gemini Live?
Astra is the broader research effort; Gemini Live is a Google product into which Google says some Astra-explored capabilities have been integrated. That distinction matters: the prototype’s ambitions should not be mistaken for features a Gemini Live user can necessarily access.

| Aspect | Project Astra | Gemini Live |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Research prototype for a broader, context-aware assistant. | Google product with some capabilities first explored using Astra, according to Google. |
| Access | Limited number of trusted testers, according to Google DeepMind’s current project page. | Availability depends on the product’s rollout; the cited Astra and Gemini announcements do not specify uniform eligibility by account, plan, or region. |
| Scope | Explores ongoing perception, memory, tool use, and future assistant form factors. | Includes selected Astra-derived features such as video understanding, screen sharing, and memory, as described by Google in May 2025. |
In practical terms, look to Gemini Live for features Google has made part of that product. Astra is relevant as the research program exploring how an assistant might become more continuous, context-aware, and capable across devices.
Does Project Astra work on glasses?
Google has demonstrated Astra on prototype glasses and says a small group of trusted testers was to try them. Glasses represent a hands-free, first-person way to share what the wearer sees; they are a research form factor, not a substantiated retail option. Google also describes Astra work on Android phones, where a camera and screen can provide visual context. Neither form factor makes the prototype generally available.

Google says it is developing a version of Astra in collaboration with blind and low-vision people. Its Visual Interpreter research prototype is intended to understand objects and unfamiliar spaces, respond as the camera view changes, and work with Google products including Maps, Photos, and Lens. Google names visual-interpreting service Aira as a partner; Aira users and interpreters helped tailor the prototype.

Google’s page describes Dorsey Parker using a phone to hear descriptions of his surroundings and explore new places. This is evidence of prototype development with community input, not proof of a finished assistive product, clinical validation, universal availability, or guaranteed accessibility outcomes.
What is known about Astra’s safety and performance?
Google says it recognizes the responsibilities of agentic technology and aims to prioritize safety and security. The cited project page does not provide detailed safeguards, independent evaluations, privacy controls, failure rates, or benchmark results. There are also no independent Astra performance statistics in the cited official material. A smooth demonstration should therefore be read as an illustration of a research direction, not as evidence of measured reliability or proven safety.
