If you can still use a signed-in iPhone or iPad to open your account settings, you can replace a lost recovery key by going to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Recovery Key > Replace Recovery Key. This creates a new key; Apple cannot retrieve the old one. If you are already locked out and do not have the key, Apple warns you may be locked out permanently.
Replace the key from a signed-in iPhone or iPad
Apple’s current instructions use the name “Apple Account”; many people still call it an Apple ID. The replacement option is available after a recovery key has been set up, and you must be able to reach account settings on a device signed in to that account.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Sign-In & Security, then Recovery Key.
- Tap Replace Recovery Key and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Write down or print the new key, store it securely, and complete any confirmation shown onscreen.
Apple’s recovery-key instructions explain the setting and replacement process. Replacing the key generates a new one; it does not reveal or restore the lost key.
What the recovery key does—and why losing it matters
A recovery key is an optional 28-character code used along with a trusted phone number and an Apple device to help regain access to an Apple Account. Apple says that if you set one up and later lose access to your account without being able to provide the key, you may be locked out permanently. Apple cannot provide a lost recovery key.

Turning on a recovery key disables Apple’s standard account-recovery process. Do not assume that the usual account-recovery steps can bypass a missing key. Apple’s account sign-in and recovery guidance can help you identify the appropriate support flow for your situation, but it does not guarantee recovery without the key.
If you are already locked out and do not have the key
The replacement steps above require access to a signed-in device’s account settings. If you are locked out and lack the key, you cannot use those steps to generate a replacement. Apple says regaining access when you have no trusted device or are locked out requires the recovery key and a verification code sent to your trusted phone number; it warns that losing the key after losing account access can lead to permanent lockout.

You can consult Apple’s official account-recovery support flow for your specific circumstances, but do not count on it to overcome the missing key.
A recovery contact is a separate option
A recovery contact is not a way to retrieve your 28-character key. If you had already designated a recovery contact, that person may be able to provide a recovery code to assist with an account-recovery process. The option has its own requirements, and Apple does not present it as a guaranteed fallback for someone locked out after enabling a recovery key and losing it. Store the replacement key safely
Apple recommends writing or printing the key and keeping the copy somewhere safe; keeping copies in more than one secure place can help protect against another loss. Apple advises against storing it in Apple Passwords, iCloud Photos, Notes, or iCloud Drive: those may be inaccessible if you lose access to the Apple Account. A physical document safe is only an optional place to keep a newly made paper copy—it cannot recover a key that is already lost.
