Google says it changed Google Calendar’s default observances globally in mid-2024. The default list was narrowed to public holidays and national observances sourced from timeanddate.com; users can still add cultural events themselves. Google explained the change publicly on February 12, 2025, saying it could not feasibly maintain a consistent, comprehensive list of hundreds of moments across countries.
What changed in Google Calendar
The change affected which events appeared in Calendar by default. Google said it had previously added a broader range of moments manually, including cultural celebrations and teachers’ days. In mid-2024, it simplified the default display to public holidays and national observances.
Google says Calendar uses timeanddate.com APIs for this default holiday and observance data in every country where Calendar is available, and that timeanddate.com keeps the APIs updated. Google’s explanation was published on its official blog on February 12, 2025.
Why Google says it made the change
Google said users had pointed out that many events and countries were missing from its manually maintained collection. It concluded that keeping hundreds of moments complete and consistent around the world was not feasible. The company described this as the reason for returning to public holidays and national observances as the default.

Which events were reported missing?
News coverage identified Black History Month, Pride Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Indigenous Peoples Month, and Holocaust Remembrance Day as examples people noticed missing from the default Calendar display. Google did not publish a complete inventory of every cultural moment that had previously been added, so these examples should not be treated as an exhaustive official list.

Can you add cultural events to Calendar?
Yes. The change was to the default observances, not a claim that users cannot keep or create events in Calendar. Google says Calendar is customizable and users can add important moments themselves. The precise steps depend on how you want to track an observance: add an individual event for a date you choose, or use a calendar or source you trust if you want a recurring or broader set of dates.

Google also said it continues to promote cultural moments across its products, citing Black History Month and Lunar New Year. That broader statement is not a promise that those moments remain default entries in Google Calendar. Google’s public clarification explains the policy change, but does not establish the exact current default observance set for every locale or account.
