The reported US$66 million figure cannot be verified from the available sources. The clearest recent approval is different: Taiwan approved two Google investment applications in April 2026 totaling about NT$27 billion (reported as US$857 million), but officials did not disclose their detailed uses. That approval should not be described as a specific new data center commitment.

What is Google investing in Taiwan?

Google’s documented Taiwan footprint includes its Changhua County data center, which the company says opened in 2013, and a Taipei AI infrastructure hardware engineering hub announced in November 2025. These are distinct activities; neither establishes a US$66 million data center project.

Changhua data center

Google says it has invested more than US$1.6 billion in its Changhua data center since 2011, covering construction, expansion, outfitting and ongoing upgrades. This is the company’s cumulative figure for that facility, not a new 2026 commitment. Google’s Changhua facility page also says the site contributed roughly US$4.9 billion to Taiwan’s GDP annually from 2017 through 2022; that is a company-reported modeled contribution for that period.

Taipei engineering hub

Google described its Taipei hardware engineering hub as its largest AI infrastructure hardware engineering hub outside the United States and said it housed hundreds of employees when it announced the hub on November 20, 2025. The work is separate from operating a data center. Google’s announcement describes the hub’s role; Taiwan’s President’s Office also reported the opening of an AI infrastructure R&D center on the same date (President’s Office announcement).

What does the NT$27 billion approval cover?

Focus Taiwan reported on April 22, 2026, that Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs approved two Google applications totaling about NT$27 billion, reported as US$857 million. The reported components were:

  • NT$25.34 billion through Fructan Holdings Singapore Pte. for data processing and electronics information services.
  • NT$1.74 billion through Connectds Singapore Pte. for semiconductor-related purchases.

The ministry did not disclose detailed uses. Media reports linked the applications to existing cloud-related business and a Changhua site, and reported Google was planning another data center in Tainan; those are not confirmed allocations from the ministry. The approval therefore cannot be treated as proof that the entire sum—or any specific portion—is for a new data center. Focus Taiwan’s report on the approval gives the amounts and the limits of what officials disclosed.

Is Google building a new data center in Taiwan?

The sources establish Google’s existing Changhua facility and a 2019 Tainan expansion plan reported by Taiwan’s Invest Taiwan agency. That 2019 report is historical context, not confirmation of a current construction schedule. The 2026 investment approval does not, by itself, confirm that a new Tainan data center is being built or specify its funding. Invest Taiwan’s 2019 report documents the earlier plan.

What other Taiwan expansion has Google announced?

In September 2026, Google executive Amin Vahdat said the company planned to increase its Taiwan office space by 60 percent. He did not provide an investment amount, hiring target or timetable. He also described Taiwanese partners’ growing role in AI hardware co-design, saying, “We couldn’t be building the infrastructure, the compute platform that we do today, without this deep co-design.” Focus Taiwan reported the remarks at SEMICON Taiwan. How does power fit into Google’s Taiwan data center plans?

Google announced in April 2025 that it had signed its first Taiwan offshore wind power purchase agreement with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The company said the project was expected to begin operating in 2027 and supply power to its data centers and offices in Taiwan. That is a stated expectation, not confirmation that the project is already operating, and it does not verify the US$66 million figure. Google’s offshore wind announcement provides the company’s description and timeline.
