Yes—Google has begun replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on covered Android mobile devices. Google announced that removal would start on September 3, 2026, and could take a few weeks to reach users. That change covers phones and tablets and some devices connected to a phone, but it does not itself end Assistant on Google Home or Nest speakers and displays. Those products have a separate, staged Gemini for Home rollout. Cars with Google built-in are an explicit exception to the mobile cutoff.
When is Google Assistant going away?
Google’s August 6, 2026 notice says removal of Assistant access on mobile devices would begin September 3 and take a few weeks. The notice describes the start and expected duration of a staged rollout; it does not confirm that every eligible user has already lost access. Once Assistant is removed from a covered device, Google says users will no longer be able to use it or switch back to it. Google’s transition notice is the relevant source for the mobile change.
This is a revision to Google’s earlier timeline. In a March 14, 2025 announcement, the company said it expected to move most mobile users later that year, while leaving Assistant unchanged on devices that did not meet Gemini’s minimum system requirements at that time. The August 2026 notice supplies the later announced start date; the 2025 plan should not be treated as the final schedule. Google’s March 2025 announcement.
Which devices are affected by the mobile transition?
Google’s notice covers Android phones and tablets, as well as certain devices that rely on a phone. It distinguishes these from home speakers and displays and from cars running Google’s built-in system.

Google’s August 6, 2026 mobile transition notice is the source for these device categories and the built-in-car exception. “Android Auto” here means the experience projected from a phone; it is not the same category as a car with Google built-in.
Will Google Assistant still work on a Google Nest speaker?
The mobile cutoff does not switch a Nest or Home speaker or display to Gemini. Google is handling home devices through Gemini for Home, a separate product rollout. Google introduced it in August 2025 as a household-focused assistant intended to replace Assistant on existing speakers and displays, with additional capabilities in the Home app and on cameras and doorbells. Home rollout eligibility
Google Home Help describes Gemini for Home as an early-access rollout to selected countries and languages, with more users to be added over time. Google says eligible households are notified in the Google Home app. Eligibility includes a personal Google account rather than a Workspace account, a supported country and language, and compatible device firmware.
- Speakers need Cast firmware 3.76 or higher.
- Displays need Fuchsia firmware 28 or higher.
- Access also depends on the household’s country, language, account type, compatible device, and whether the rollout has reached it.
These are Google’s stated minimum firmware versions; the Gemini for Home Help page is the live reference for compatibility and availability.

What happens after a home upgrades?
When a household switches, compatible current devices and compatible devices added later use Gemini for Home instead of Assistant. Google says devices that become compatible later switch automatically. A household cannot switch back to Assistant after upgrading, so this is a home-level product transition rather than a matter of installing or uninstalling an app. Check the current Help page and in-app availability before opting in.
Will Gemini work on an older Google Home?
Google separates devices that support the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant from older hardware that supports most features but not Gemini Live. The complete-assistant list includes both first-generation and newer products, so “old” alone does not determine compatibility.

This is Google’s published compatibility distinction, not a guarantee that early access is available to every owner of a listed model. Firmware and rollout status matter too. Verify the current Gemini for Home device list for a specific household.

Google’s feature table places basic household tasks in the no-cost core: smart-home controls, media search and playback, alarms and timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, and questions. Gemini Live requires a compatible device and Google Home Premium. The table also places camera-history search and Home Brief in the Advanced plan column. Not every Gemini for Home capability is therefore free, but a paid tier is not listed as a requirement for basic voice controls. Google describes Gemini for Home as enabling more natural requests and follow-up conversation than rigid command phrasing. Its product announcement also describes AI-written camera event descriptions, Home Brief summaries, and natural-language search of video history. Does replacing Assistant mean you need a new speaker?
No. Google lists supported existing products—including the Nest Mini (2nd gen), Nest Audio, and first-generation Nest Hub—among devices that can support the complete Gemini for Home voice assistant. The transition itself is a software rollout and does not require buying a new speaker. A device’s actual access still depends on compatibility, firmware, and household rollout eligibility.
