Linux.com email forwarding gives eligible Linux Foundation Individual Supporters an @linux.com alias that forwards incoming messages to an address they choose. It is not a mailbox: the Foundation says the service does not include webmail, SMTP, IMAP, POP3, or sending from the alias. If you need a complete email account, this service does not meet that need.

What Linux.com email forwarding does—and does not do

The Linux Foundation describes the feature as a “vanity email forwarding service only.” Mail sent to your requested Linux.com alias is routed to your destination address. You use that destination account to read the forwarded messages.

The Foundation says it does not provide SMTP, IMAP, POP3, or webmail for the service, and sending from the Linux.com alias is unsupported. In practical terms, do not expect to compose or reply as your @linux.com address through a mail app or website. The Foundation’s Individual Supporters FAQ explains the service scope; its Linux.com Email Forwarding product page was updated March 11, 2022 and also states that sending from the alias is unsupported.

Is it right for you?

Your need Does this service provide it?
A public-facing @linux.com address that forwards incoming mail to your existing account Yes, subject to alias availability.
A hosted inbox, webmail, standard mail protocols, or the ability to send as the @linux.com address No. The Foundation says these are not provided for this service.

Who can buy it, and what does it cost?

The Linux Foundation says only Individual Supporters can purchase a Linux.com alias. On October 8, 2026, its Individual Supporters page displayed $99 for Individual Supporter enrollment and $150 for the lifetime Linux.com email add-on. These are the prices shown on that date, not guaranteed future prices; check the page before purchasing.

  1. Become an Individual Supporter if you are not already one; the Foundation limits alias purchases to Individual Supporters.
  2. Sign in to your Linux Foundation profile and open the Linux.com Email section or widget settings. The purchase documentation describes the profile purchase flow.
  3. Complete the email add-on purchase, then request an alias. Your preferred name is subject to availability. The Foundation does not offer an online availability checker; its FAQ says you can contact support to ask whether a particular alias is available.
  4. Enter the destination email address where incoming messages should be forwarded, and complete the setup shown in your account.

Choose the public-facing alias carefully. The Foundation’s purchase documentation says the alias itself cannot be edited after purchase, though you can change the forwarding destination later.

What to do if a test message is missing

The Foundation documents a Gmail-specific case that can look like a delivery failure: if you send a test from the same Gmail account that receives the forwarded mail, Gmail may not show a second copy in the inbox because it treats the forwarded message as a duplicate of the message already in Sent.

To check the route, send a test from a different email account to your Linux.com alias. This behavior is described in the Foundation’s Individual Supporters FAQ; it is not a guarantee about every mail provider or every delivery issue.
