Google’s July 29, 2025 update added several learning and exploration tools to AI Mode in Search: questions about images and PDFs, Canvas for building and revising plans, Search Live conversations using a live camera view, and Lens in Chrome for asking about what is on screen. These features do different jobs, and Google’s rollout conditions varied by feature. Its current Help page says Canvas is available in English in the US on desktop and mobile; the sources do not establish the current eligibility rules for PDF uploads or Search Live.
What Google added to AI Mode
Google announced the changes on July 29, 2025, in a post by Robby Stein, VP of Product, Google Search. The update was framed for students, parents, and educators, but the features are useful for anyone trying to understand visual material, work through a document, or organize a project.
| Feature | What you provide | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Image questions | An image and a prompt | Ask about visual material, such as a concept or diagram. |
| PDF uploads | A PDF and a question | Ask about a document, such as lecture slides, with the file providing context. |
| Canvas | A task prompt and follow-up instructions | Build and iteratively refine a plan, project, or other working document. |
| Search Live with video | A live camera view and spoken conversation | Discuss what the camera is seeing in a back-and-forth exchange. |
| Lens in Chrome | Content visible in a desktop browser | Ask about a page or visual element on screen and follow up through AI Mode. |
Ask questions about images and PDFs
Image questions
Google said users could already ask complex questions about images in the Google app on Android and iOS, and that the same capability was launching on desktop browsers during the week of the July 29 announcement. The idea is to use an image as context for a question, rather than describe it from scratch.
PDF uploads
Google said PDF uploads on desktop would arrive “in the coming weeks.” A student could, for example, ask a detailed question about lecture slides. Google described AI Mode as analyzing the uploaded file, cross-referencing relevant information from the web, and returning an AI response with prominent links for further reading. This is intended product behavior, not an independent guarantee that every answer or link will be complete or correct. Google’s August 6, 2025 back-to-school roundup later listed PDF uploads as an AI Mode feature.

Google’s July announcement stated that image and PDF features were available in the US and India, in English, to users 18 and older; the PDF desktop rollout was described as forthcoming. Those are the announcement’s rollout-era terms, not confirmation of current eligibility.
Use Canvas for a plan you can keep refining
Canvas is the most project-oriented feature in the update. Google introduced it as a side panel for organizing information and developing a plan across sessions. In the launch example, a user asks AI Mode for a study plan, selects “Create Canvas,” then uses follow-up prompts to adjust the result. Unlike a one-off question, the goal is a working project that can be revisited and changed.

What Canvas can do now
Google’s current Search Help page describes Canvas as an AI-powered collaboration tool in AI Mode for plans, projects, and tasks. Its examples include a trip itinerary, party plan, fitness schedule, website, cover letter, study guide, and interactive quiz. Google says users can create, save, edit, and share projects; refine them with specific details; ask questions about text in a response or Canvas; undo and redo changes; and resume saved Canvas threads from history.
How to start a Canvas
- Open Google AI Mode and select Canvas in the prompt menu.
- Enter a task, such as creating a study guide or planning a project.
- Use specific follow-up prompts to revise the Canvas, then save or share the project if useful.
- To continue later, open the saved Canvas thread from history. Google says enabling history and personalized recommendations provides the best experience.
Google’s current Help page lists Canvas as available in English to users in the US on desktop and mobile. That is more current guidance than the July 2025 announcement, which described a Labs rollout to US participants, in English, age 18 or older, beginning on desktop browsers. Do not apply that launch-era Labs condition as a universal current rule.

Search Live brings a camera view into the conversation
Search Live combines a live camera feed with a back-and-forth conversation in AI Mode. Google described it as integrated with Lens: users can point the camera at something and discuss what is visible, rather than relying only on a still image or typed description.
At launch, Google said Search Live with video was rolling out on mobile in the US for people enrolled in the AI Mode Labs experiment. The available sources do not establish its exact current country, age, or account eligibility rules, so that launch description should not be treated as a promise that the feature is available to every US mobile user today.

Ask about what is on screen with Lens in Chrome
Lens in Chrome addresses a different situation from Search Live: the material is already displayed in a desktop browser. Google’s examples include a diagram in a PDF or content on a website. A user can ask about that visible material and continue with follow-up questions through AI Mode. This is useful when a page or diagram is the subject of the question, while PDF upload is the route Google described for asking about an uploaded document’s contents.

The July 2025 post described separate rollouts, not one shared eligibility rule. Image and PDF questions had US-and-India, English, and age-18-plus language; Canvas was tied to an English-language US Labs rollout for adults; and Search Live with video began on mobile in the US for AI Mode Labs participants. Google’s current Canvas Help page now says Canvas is available in English in the US on desktop and mobile. Current PDF and Search Live eligibility is not established by the sources cited here.

Verify AI answers before relying on them
Google’s Canvas Help page cautions that “AI responses may include mistakes.” Treat generated study plans and explanations as a starting point: check important facts against course materials or linked sources, especially when an answer affects an assignment or decision.
