A chat can include prompts, responses, tool calls, and accumulated context. For Copilot session history specifically, VS Code documents local SQLite storage and GitHub-account sync by default, with controls to disable sync or delete local and cloud data. Closing or archiving keeps history; deleting is permanent and can also remove related worktree data.
How a session differs from a chat
VS Code describes a session as the unit of work with an agent. It groups the workspace and code changes associated with a task, and can contain one or more chats where supported. Each chat has its own conversation history and context; chats in one session share the session’s workspace and code isolation. Visual Studio Code’s agent sessions documentation explains the session model.
That distinction matters when deciding what to remove: closing or deleting a chat affects its conversation, while deleting a session can affect the larger work unit and its associated resources.
What VS Code agent history can contain
Conversation content
A chat can record your prompts, the agent’s responses, tool calls, and context accumulated during the conversation. VS Code also supports exporting a chat session as JSON, containing its prompts and responses, and copying a chat as Markdown. Exporting preserves a copy; it does not delete the original. Copilot session-history tracking data
For Copilot session history, VS Code says its local tracking data includes the repository, branch, working directory, timestamps, agent or participant, conversation turns, paths of files touched through tool calls, and references such as pull request and issue numbers or commit SHAs. This data is stored in a local SQLite database, according to VS Code’s session history documentation.
These storage details apply to the Copilot session-history feature documented by VS Code. They do not establish one universal storage location or format for every agent type or external agent harness supported in VS Code.

Where Copilot session history is stored and synced
VS Code says local Copilot sessions sync to the user’s GitHub account by default. Synced sessions are private unless explicitly shared. To keep session-history data local, set chat.sessionSync.enabled to false. The documentation also describes a repository-exclusion setting. For Copilot Business and Enterprise, GitHub enterprise policy and VS Code group policy can control sync; when policy disables sync, users cannot override that restriction. Consult the session history documentation for current setting details.
What each close, archive, or delete action does

Check worktree and container changes before deleting a session
A session can have files in an associated Git worktree that are not present elsewhere. VS Code warns that deleting a session can remove its worktree and lose uncommitted files that exist only there. If you need those changes, commit, copy, or otherwise preserve them before deletion; if you only want to declutter, mark the session done or archive it instead.
For a Dev Container session, deletion removes the container only when no other session or unsent draft uses it. The relevant behavior and conditions are described in the agent sessions documentation.

Automatic cleanup of merged sessions
VS Code documents automatic cleanup of eligible merged sessions as a preview. Separate settings govern when an inactive eligible session is marked done and the grace period before permanent deletion; both are disabled by default. Eligibility depends on merged pull request conditions, and worktrees are removed only when their Git state meets the documented safety conditions. Because this preview and its configuration can change, check the current session settings documentation before relying on exact thresholds or behavior.
