iMessage has games available through iMessage apps and extensions, including GamePigeon. Google Messages games, by contrast, are not confirmed as generally available: an October 7, 2026 report found game references in a beta build, but described the feature as still in development. RCS features such as read receipts and richer media do not, by themselves, provide games or guarantee compatibility with iMessage games.
How iMessage games work
Apple’s model is app-based: developers can create iMessage apps and extensions that add experiences inside conversations. Apple says users can “share content, edit photos, play games, collaborate with friends, and more within a custom interface that you design.” Apple describes these apps as available through the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and iMessage.
GamePigeon is one example. Apple’s App Store editorial page describes it as a collection of games played over iMessage. That is an example of an available app, not evidence that a particular game comes preinstalled for every iMessage user.
What is known about Google Messages games
Android Authority reported on October 7, 2026 that it found game-related references in the Google Messages open beta build messages.android_20261002_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic. The references included Word Scramble, Chess, Cup Pong, Checkers, Pool, Basketball, Four in a Row, Crazy 8s, and Darts. The report characterized the feature as work in progress.

Those strings are a development signal, not a public availability announcement. They do not establish that the games have launched, that the list is final, that all beta testers can use them, or that the games will work across platforms. Google’s general beta guidance says beta testers may try experimental features before release and that beta versions can be unstable; it does not confirm that this specific feature is enabled for testers.

RCS messaging is separate from games
Google documents RCS features including typing indicators, read receipts, messaging over mobile data or Wi-Fi, high-resolution photo and file sharing, and group-chat controls. It also says conversations with other Google Messages users can have end-to-end encryption under the documented conditions. These are messaging capabilities; Google’s cited RCS pages do not describe a games catalog or game-invitation system.

RCS availability depends on region, carrier, device, provider, and participant settings. Google says RCS chats turn on only when every participant has RCS. Its encryption statement is specifically about communication with other Google Messages users, so cross-platform RCS should not be taken to mean that iMessage extensions work in Google Messages, that games are shared between platforms, or that every conversation is encrypted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which should you use to play a chat game?
If you want a currently documented option, iMessage apps such as GamePigeon are the supported choice in this comparison. If you use Google Messages, treat the reported titles as possible development work rather than games you can count on accessing now. RCS may improve the messaging experience between compatible participants, but it does not establish game availability.
