Google Play Games recommendations are part of Google Play’s broader system for finding apps and games; Steam groups several distinct discovery tools in its store, including personalized recommendations, curator picks, friends’ reviews, tags, popular releases, and the Discovery Queue. Google describes broad factors that can influence Play discovery, while Valve documents Steam’s features and placements—not a complete current recommendation formula for either platform.
Where you find games
Google Play Games and Google Play
Google Play discovery spans browsing, search, game pages, and editorial selections. The Play Games app also offers ways to find games, but the available instructions and surfaces differ between Android phones and tablets and Android TV. Google says discovery can vary according to the surface and device, so the experience is not identical everywhere.
Google’s guide to finding new or previously played games explains the user-facing options. Its separate overview of app discovery and ranking describes the wider Play Store context.
Steam
Steam puts multiple routes to games in its store: personalized recommendations, curator recommendations, friends’ reviews, popular releases, genre and tag pages, and the Discovery Queue. These are not simply different labels for one feed; each gives you a different way to narrow or encounter games. Valve’s Steamworks documentation also lists the Discovery Queue and genre or tag pages among possible visibility placements for games.

The Steam Discovery Update page describes features from the 2014 update era. Its description of the Discovery Queue is historical context, not a newly issued statement about today’s ranking system. The current comparison is best understood as a comparison of the tools Steam documents, rather than as a claim about a single, fully explained algorithm.
What the platforms say can shape recommendations
Google Play personalization
Google says Play personalization may use Play History, Play content such as items purchased or downloaded, and information associated with a Google Account. The company also says that ranking factors and their weighting can differ by store surface, device, and personal preferences. Its public material names broad considerations—including the query, app quality, editorial value, user experience, advertising, and preferences—but does not disclose a complete formula.

You can manage Play personalization and history through Google Play’s personalization and history settings guidance. Turning off Play personalization limits use of account information for that purpose; it does not mean every signal disappears. Google says device, country, and installed apps may still shape the experience.
Steam activity and community signals
Valve’s feature description connects Steam recommendations to activity and community signals, including games played, wishlist items, and friends’ recommendations. The cited Steam Discovery Update page dates to the 2014 feature rollout, so those details should not be treated as a complete, current account of every signal Steam uses today. Valve’s public materials establish discovery features and placements, but not a full current recommendation formula.

What controls you get
| Control | Google Play Games / Play | Steam |
|---|---|---|
| Personalization | Google documents settings for Play personalization and history. What you see also depends on the surface and device. | Steam describes ways to customize discovery areas and act on suggestions. |
| Responding to suggestions | The cited user guide covers finding games through recommendations, search, and browsing; the cited materials do not describe an equivalent single set of recommendation-response actions. | You can wishlist, follow, purchase, or ignore suggestions. |
| Browsing beyond recommendations | Search, browsing, game pages, and editorial selections are part of broader Play discovery. | Curators, friends’ reviews, popular releases, tags, genres, and the Discovery Queue offer distinct routes. |
Google’s controls focus on personalization and history settings. Steam’s documented controls include both customizing discovery areas and responding to individual suggestions. The available options depend on each platform’s interface and context.
How to choose which one to browse
- Start with Google Play Games if you are looking for games in the Android and Google Play context, or want recommendations alongside Play search, browsing, and game pages. Check the instructions for your device because phone, tablet, and Android TV surfaces can differ.
- Start with Steam if you want to combine recommendations with community input, curator picks, tags, genres, popular releases, and a dedicated queue.
- Review settings first if personalization is a concern. Google documents Play personalization and history controls; Steam describes customizable discovery areas.
Neither platform’s cited public documentation establishes that its recommendations are objectively more accurate or better. The practical difference is how each service organizes discovery and which controls and browsing routes it makes explicit.

How much of the recommendation system is public?
Google publishes broad ranking factors and notes that their weighting varies by surface, device, and preferences. Valve publishes descriptions of Steam discovery features and visibility placements. Neither set of cited materials provides a complete current formula that would let a reader predict exactly why a particular game appears where it does.
That distinction matters: a list of possible signals is not the same thing as a disclosed ranking recipe. Treat the published information as an explanation of the services’ discovery tools and broad influences, not a guarantee about what any specific account will see.
