But generic vascular simulation does not reproduce a robotic console, and simulation alone is not a substitute for platform-specific instruction or supervised clinical progression.
What can you practice without the robot?
Separate two kinds of learning: endovascular procedural skills and control of a particular robotic platform. A general vascular simulator may let you practice catheter and guidewire handling, imaging, device deployment, and responses to simulated complications. Those exercises can help prepare you for procedural work, but they do not establish that you can operate a robotic console.
Start by agreeing on a target procedure and learning objectives with a training director, supervisor, or experienced operator. The ANGIO Mentor curriculum, for example, assumes learners already know relevant anatomy and procedural steps; it begins modules with an experienced operator demonstrating a case. Treat that vendor-authored curriculum as a way to organize practice, not as a personal clinical protocol.
Use a staged practice plan
- Define the target. Specify the procedure, your current level, and whether you need general endovascular preparation or training on a named robotic system. Ask a qualified supervisor which skills matter at your stage.
- Review anatomy and procedure flow. Before a simulator session, study the anatomy, access approach, imaging sequence, devices, and procedural steps relevant to the planned exercise. Follow your institution’s teaching materials and the supervisor’s guidance.
- Choose exercises the simulator actually supports. Depending on the system and curriculum, practice may include wire and catheter manipulation, diagnostic arteriography, fluoroscopy, digital subtraction angiography, roadmapping, contrast use, stent-graft positioning and deployment, EVAR or TEVAR steps, embolization, and simulated troubleshooting such as endoleaks. Do not assume every simulator includes every task.
- Repeat deliberately and review performance. Set a specific objective for each session, review available simulator feedback with a supervisor, and note which actions need work before repeating the exercise. Repetition without feedback or an assessment plan is a weaker approach than structured practice.
- Progress through local assessment and supervision. Ask how your program evaluates performance and what supervised steps follow simulation. A simulator score or completed module should not be treated as permission to perform patient-facing procedures independently.
Structured programs offer examples rather than universal requirements. Vall d’Hebron’s residency program describes online theory, supervised high-fidelity simulator practice, autonomous practice, and a combined theory-and-practical assessment; it specifies a minimum of 20 hours of autonomous practice throughout each module. The page does not state a publication date, and that hour count is a detail of that program, not a general standard. A Simbionix curriculum published in 2012 suggests weekly faculty-mentored sessions over six months and review of performance reports; it is likewise an example, not a current universal prescription.

How the available training options differ
| Resource | What it offers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| CorPath GRX on-demand learning material from Siemens Healthineers | Training content associated with the CorPath GRX platform; potentially useful as platform-specific preparation for learners with appropriate access. | It is not a substitute for current operating instructions or supervised platform training. Siemens says the material may not reflect current hardware or software and may not be available in every country or configuration. |
| ANGIO Mentor | A vendor-authored virtual-reality curriculum describing peripheral and aortic endovascular tasks, including wire and catheter handling, imaging, EVAR, TEVAR, and embolization. | The curriculum does not establish that the simulator reproduces CorPath controls or trains robotic-console competence. It dates to 2012. |
| CathTrain | Its manufacturer describes a standalone physical and virtual patient-specific simulator using actual or modeled wires, catheters, balloons, coils, and stents. | The product description alone does not establish independent performance evidence or transfer to a robotic console; confirm features, availability, and educational use with the provider and your institution. |
| BEST simulator | A 2018 study assessed face, content, and construct validity for specified basic endovascular tasks. | The findings do not establish competence in endovascular robotic surgery or transfer to clinical robotic cases. |
These options serve different purposes. A general vascular simulator can support procedural rehearsal, while platform-specific material is more relevant to learning a particular system’s interface. Before investing time in a resource, ask whether it models the target procedure, the target platform’s controls, or only some of the underlying catheter-based tasks.
Can simulation replace clinical robotic training?
No. The international IMRA/SRS Delphi consensus on robotic-surgery training, published in 2024, rejected the proposition that simulation alone can provide sufficient experience without clinical experience: only 17% of participants agreed with that proposition. That figure is the share agreeing with a consensus statement, not a measured success rate for a training method.

The evidence for simulators is also specific to the simulator and task studied. In the 2018 BEST simulator study, the participants were 21 medical students, 26 residents, and 14 expert surgeons. Its validity findings concern tested basic endovascular skills, not readiness to perform robotic endovascular procedures. Treat simulator results as evidence about the exercises assessed, not as a credential for a different platform or clinical task.
A 2026 UK Delphi paper reported more than 80% consensus on basic system control, camera control, clutching, dissection, energy use, and retraction as simulator prerequisites before clinical console training. Those are multispecialty robotic-surgery curriculum findings, not an endovascular-specific certification standard. They reinforce the importance of console preparation but cannot define the requirements for an endovascular robot at your institution.

How to seek platform-specific preparation
For learners whose intended system is CorPath GRX, Siemens Healthineers offers on-demand learning material. Siemens states: “This material is to be used as training material only and shall by no means substitute the Operator Manual.” The company identifies the current Operator Manual as the primary reference for correct hardware and software use and safety information, and warns that training material may not be current or available in every country.
Ask your institution, training director, or the platform manufacturer whether approved training access is available, which hardware and software version it covers, and what supervision is required. Do not use older online content as an operating instruction. If no approved console access is available, focus on the procedural skills your simulator can support and make a plan with your supervisor for later platform-specific instruction.

Questions to take to a supervisor or training center
- Which platform, procedure, and learner-level objectives should I prepare for?
- Does the available simulator reproduce the robotic controls, or does it teach general catheter navigation and imaging?
- Which exercises and feedback measures are appropriate for my current level?
- Who will review my performance, and what assessment is required before I move to supervised platform or clinical training?
- Is current approved platform training available locally, and does access or eligibility vary by country or institution?
There is no established low-cost or improvised home setup in these sources that can safely substitute for a clinical endovascular robot. Use institution-approved simulators and training resources rather than assembling clinical equipment as a stand-in.
