For text-first work, start with Rainbow CSV; for data cleaning and generated Pandas code, consider Microsoft Data Wrangler; for workbook previews, consider CSV & Excel Viewer; and for direct CSV/TSV grid edits, consider Light CSV View & Edit.

Best for staying in the text editor: Rainbow CSV
Rainbow CSV colors delimited columns so rows are easier to scan in a text editor. It also offers column tracking and alignment, CSVLint consistency checks, and RBQL, a SQL-like language for querying data. You can use common delimiters or configure an arbitrary separator. What its checks and queries do
- CSVLint checks for consistent double-quote use and equal field counts across rows.
- RBQL lets you query and transform delimited data without leaving the text-editor workflow.
- Alignment options can change file content, so distinguish visual aids from transformations before saving.
Limitations to consider
The listing says files over 300,000 lines or 20 MB may require turning off VS Code’s “Editor: Large File Optimizations.” Above 50 MB, VS Code disables all Rainbow CSV features. The extension may be less effective with many columns or multiline fields, and column colors can be harder to distinguish in light themes. These are documented product caveats, not independent performance measurements.
Best for data exploration and cleaning: Microsoft Data Wrangler
Data Wrangler integrates with VS Code and Jupyter notebooks. Its documented inputs include CSV/TSV, XLS/XLSX, and Parquet. It offers viewing and editing modes, column summaries, filters and sorts, and built-in cleaning operations. It can generate Python/Pandas code for transformations, which you can export to a notebook; cleaned data can be saved as a new CSV or Parquet file. Requirements and preserving the source
Microsoft’s documentation requires Python 3.8 or later and Pandas 0.25.2 or later. Data Wrangler works in a sandbox; Microsoft states, “The original dataset is not modified until you explicitly export your changes.” This is useful when you want to inspect or transform data without overwriting the input by default.

Encoding caveat
Microsoft notes that direct file opening can fail for non-UTF-8 encodings. Its documentation describes reading the file through Pandas with an encoding setting as a workaround. The guide is dated 04/04/2024, so confirm its requirements and current support before relying on it in a new setup.
Best for previewing CSV and selected Excel workbooks: CSV & Excel Viewer
The Marketplace listing describes previews for CSV, TSV, and TAB files, plus XLSX and XLSM workbooks. It says CSV columns can be sorted and filtered, and workbook sheets can be selected with sheet tabs. Do not treat “Excel support” as support for every Excel format: the listing names XLSX and XLSM. If you rely on a particular workbook type or feature, verify it against the current listing and a representative file.
Best for lightweight CSV/TSV grid editing: Light CSV View & Edit
Light CSV View & Edit provides a virtualized grid with search, text/number/regex filters, view-only sorting, and controls to resize or reorder columns. Its listing also describes automatic delimiter detection and support for quoted fields containing commas or newlines. Cell edits are saved through VS Code and support undo and redo. How to decide without changing your workflow by accident
- Choose Rainbow CSV if you want to keep the file as delimited text and need easier column reading, row consistency checks, or RBQL.
- Choose Data Wrangler if you want visual exploration and cleaning steps that can become reusable Pandas code, and you can meet its Python and Pandas requirements.
- Choose CSV & Excel Viewer if your main need is previewing CSV-like files or the specific XLSX/XLSM workbook formats it lists.
- Choose Light CSV View & Edit if you want a grid for CSV/TSV search, filtering, sorting, and cell edits, while accounting for its read-only threshold.
Before adopting an extension for important work, test it with a copy of a representative file. Check the format, encoding, row count, multiline or quoted-field behavior, and whether edits alter the original or require an explicit export. Marketplace feature descriptions can change, so verify the current listing and documentation.

Yes. Rainbow CSV keeps you in a text-editor workflow, while Light CSV View & Edit provides a grid for direct CSV/TSV cell edits. Data Wrangler is another option when the task is data cleaning and you want to export the result or generated code. Which fits depends on whether you need text editing, grid edits, or transformation tools—not on a single universal definition of “edit.”
