Use Excel when you want to inspect CSV data as rows and columns, work with formulas, or import and shape data through a guided workflow. Use VS Code when the CSV belongs to a software project, you need text-focused edits, or you want to work alongside scripts and version control. The key trade-off: Excel can interpret values when opening a CSV, while a spreadsheet-like view in VS Code depends on the extension you choose.
How Excel and VS Code handle CSV files
A CSV stores values as plain text separated by delimiters, commonly commas. It does not store spreadsheet formulas, formatting, or data types in the same way an Excel workbook does. Excel presents the values in a grid; VS Code’s built-in editor presents the file as text. Visual Studio Code describes itself as a code editor “at its heart” (VS Code documentation).

These are workflow differences, not a speed ranking. The available official sources do not establish a comparable CSV-cleaning benchmark or a supported VS Code file-size threshold.
When Excel is the better choice
For a quick visual edit
Excel is convenient when you want to scan columns, change a few cells, sort or filter data, or use formulas. For a small, straightforward edit, open the file, inspect the displayed values, make the change, and check important columns again before saving.

For guided imports and repeatable shaping
Excel’s From Text/CSV import and Text Import Wizard offer delimiter choices. Power Query lets you transform data before loading the result into a worksheet. It can infer data types, but Microsoft’s documentation warns that inference can be incorrect; review types before relying on the result (Microsoft: Import or export text files; Microsoft: About Power Query in Excel).
For a process you repeat, deliberate import settings and Power Query transformations are more reliable than repeatedly opening the raw file and hoping Excel interprets every value as intended.

When VS Code is the better choice
For text-oriented edits
VS Code’s built-in editor is suited to changes that are easier to express as text, such as replacing a repeated string or editing values in a file already open beside a script. Its general editing tools include search and replace. Because the file is plain text, you can also see its delimiters and line structure directly.
For data that lives in a code project
If the CSV is input to a program, keeping it in the same workspace as the code can make project changes easier to review and manage with version control. You can compare revisions and keep related scripts and data together without converting the CSV into a workbook.

For a spreadsheet-like view
A grid or specialized cleanup workflow is not guaranteed by a default VS Code installation. It depends on extensions. Microsoft’s VS Code documentation lists Data Wrangler in its Data Science profile for tabular data preparation (VS Code: Profiles; VS Code: Data Wrangler). Before adopting an extension, check its current Marketplace listing, publisher, features, and support information; those details can change.
How to avoid changing values during import
Preserve leading zeroes and identifier strings
Directly opening a CSV in Excel can cause values to be interpreted using current default data-format settings. An identifier such as 00127 may not remain an exact text value if Excel interprets it as a number. Microsoft’s recommended import routes give you more control: use Data > From Text/CSV or the Text Import Wizard, then set sensitive columns to Text rather than relying on defaults (Microsoft: Import or export text files).

Check dates and other date-like strings
Strings that resemble dates can also be interpreted as dates during import. If the exact original text matters, explicitly import that column as text and verify representative values in the loaded result. For transformations in Power Query, review inferred types before loading; automatic type detection is not a guarantee of correctness.
Choose the delimiter and review the result
If the file uses a delimiter other than a comma, use an import route that lets you select the delimiter rather than assuming the default is right. Check that the preview or loaded columns line up as expected, especially where values contain punctuation or quoted text.

What to know before saving back to CSV
Saving an Excel workbook as CSV is a format conversion, not a way to preserve every workbook feature. Microsoft says only the current worksheet is saved and some features may be lost. Its documented text import/export capacity is up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns; this is Excel’s stated limit, not a comparison with VS Code (Microsoft: Import or export text files; Microsoft: Excel specifications and limits).
Before converting or overwriting a file, preserve an unchanged original or use version control if the edits matter. After saving, reopen or inspect the CSV as text to confirm that delimiters, rows, and critical values remain intact.
A practical decision guide
- Choose Excel for a visible table, formulas, sorting and filtering, or guided import and transformation.
- Choose VS Code for text edits, project-based work, or changes you want to review alongside code and version history.
- For IDs, leading zeroes, and date-like strings, prioritize explicit type control during import; do not assume either a default opening or a Power Query inference preserved the intended text.
- If you need a grid in VS Code, select and verify an extension rather than assuming the built-in editor supplies one.
Whichever tool you use, treat the CSV as the original data format: preserve a copy before consequential edits and verify the saved text when exact output matters.
