For routine care, most 3D printer owners need only the tool sizes specified for their machine, needle-nose pliers, a clean cloth or paper towels, a small brush, and a way to clear loose debris. A small brass brush is useful for exterior hotend residue when your printer’s manufacturer recommends it. Buy cleaning filament, unclogging needles, compressed air, or lubricant only when your model’s instructions call for them.
What to keep in a basic 3D printer maintenance kit
Start with a few versatile items rather than a large generic kit. Exact requirements depend on the printer and its components; Prusa’s guidance for its CORE One/+, MK4/S, MK3.9/S, MK3.5/S, and XL models offers examples, not universal instructions.
- Hex keys or Allen keys: Keep the sizes required or supplied for your printer. The needed sizes vary by model.
- Needle-nose pliers: Useful for handling small filament scraps and other small pieces. Prusa lists them among its usual maintenance tools for the CORE One/+ and MK4/S families.
- A clean cloth or paper towels: Handy for general cleanup. Use only the cleaner and cloth type approved for the surface you are cleaning; print sheets, rails, and panels can have different care requirements.
- A small brush: Useful for routine dust and debris. A small brass nozzle brush has a more specific role: removing exterior residue from the hotend or heater block where the printer’s guide permits it.
- A small broom or vacuum: Either can help remove accumulated debris around the printer.
Prusa identifies these kinds of tools in its CORE One/+ maintenance guide, MK4/S and MK3.9/S guide, and MK3.5/S guide. Check your own printer’s manual for its required tool sizes and safe cleaning methods.
Which tools to add only for a specific job
Compressed air for permitted dusting
Compressed air can help with dust in some maintenance tasks, but it is optional and not appropriate for every area. Follow the printer’s instructions, particularly around electronics. Prusa cautions against holding canned air upside down; its XL maintenance guide includes additional precautions for work near electrical components.

Cleaning filament or unclogging needles
These are nozzle-maintenance supplies, not routine essentials. Cleaning filament may be appropriate for a partial clog, depending on the printer and nozzle. Needles are also model-specific: Prusa documents cleaning needles for the HT90 hotend, but that does not establish that a particular needle size or insertion method suits other printers.
Prusa’s HT90 maintenance kit is an example of a model-specific bundle containing cleaning tools, replacement parts, filters, gloves, lubricant, and other supplies. Its contents are not a template for a universal kit.

Lubricant and an applicator
Do not buy or apply lubricant until you know which component needs it and which product the printer maker specifies. Rods, bearings, lead screws, nuts, and linear rails can require different treatment—or have restrictions against certain products. In its CORE One/+ guidance, Prusa distinguishes lubrication for smooth rods and bearings from care for linear rails, and warns against using ordinary Prusa Lubricant on those rails. The XL guide specifies a dedicated rail-lubrication set and cautions against using other products on the rails.
Alcohol or other cleaners
Isopropyl alcohol appears in some printer guides for particular cleaning tasks, but it is not a universal cleaner. Prusa’s CORE One/+ guidance says not to use alcohol products, including IPA, on its panels. Check the instructions for the specific surface—especially print sheets, rails, and panels—before using a solvent.

Choose tools by the maintenance task
Clearing loose debris
Brush away dust, scraps, support fragments, and stray filament, or use a small broom or vacuum as allowed by the manufacturer. Use compressed air only where the model’s guide permits it and handle the can as directed. Avoid directing debris into sensitive components.
Removing residue from the outside of a hotend
A small brass brush can help remove exterior filament residue when the model-specific procedure recommends one. Prusa’s CORE One/+ and MK4/S-family guidance instructs users to warm residue before cleaning; those guides specify warming the nozzle for three to five minutes at 250 °C. That temperature and timing apply to the cited Prusa procedures, not to every printer. Hot parts can cause severe burns, so follow your own model’s steps and avoid brushing cables or other components.

Clearing a partial nozzle clog
A cold pull is a procedure for some partial clogs—situations where material is stuck in the hotend but filament still extrudes. It is not the right remedy for every obstruction. Prusa says not to use the cold-pull method with Nozzle X and recommends cleaning filament instead. A completely blocked nozzle calls for the applicable clogged-hotend procedure. Consult the guide for your exact printer and nozzle before attempting either method.
Prusa’s instructions cover multiple printer families, including current and legacy models: cold-pull guidance for several families and legacy-family cold-pull guidance. Procedures can differ with printer, firmware, and hotend configuration.

Lubricating moving parts
Identify the printer and moving component before buying lubricant. For example, Prusa’s XL guidance recommends lubricating its linear rails every 3–6 months with a dedicated linear-rail lubrication set, and describes inspection at roughly every 200–300 printing hours. Those are manufacturer intervals for the cited XL guidance, not a general schedule for all printers. The CORE One/+ guide also distinguishes rail lubricant from lubricant used elsewhere; other models have their own instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether a tool or kit is worth adding
Before buying an item or bundle, check it against the job you actually expect to do:
- Task: Is it for debris removal, exterior hotend cleaning, clearing a partial clog, or lubricating a moving component?
- Compatibility: Does it suit your printer model, hotend and nozzle type, motion system, and required tool sizes?
- Frequency: A brush for routine cleanup is different from an occasional clog-clearing supply or model-specific lubricant.
- Misuse risk: Consider hot surfaces, electronics, print-sheet coatings, and incompatible cleaning products or lubricants.
- Kit contents: A manufacturer’s kit may bundle replacements and model-specific items. Check the listed contents rather than assuming a kit labeled “maintenance” will fit your machine.
There is no published comparable price or performance study established here to show that a bundle is better value than assembling a kit item by item. Compare current, model-specific contents and prices if you are deciding between those options.
Check the printer’s manual before maintenance
Manufacturer guidance for one product family cannot establish safe temperatures, power-isolation steps, tool sizes, surface cleaners, lubrication points, or replacement compatibility for another. Before working on your printer, consult its exact manual and maintenance guide—especially before heating a hotend, applying lubricant or solvent, using compressed air, or putting a tool into a nozzle.
