You can batch-convert files without adding avoidable quality loss, but no single setting guarantees that every file will remain unchanged. The key is to distinguish a container change from a codec conversion, use a tool suited to the file type, and check representative results before processing the whole batch. When a conversion re-encodes already-compressed media, quality may fall; lossless encoding can avoid that extra loss but may produce much larger files.
What “without losing quality” means
A conversion can preserve encoded audio or video streams when it only changes the container and the destination supports those streams. That operation is called remuxing. It is different from transcoding, which decodes and re-encodes media. FFmpeg’s manual explains that encoding is typically lossy, while some encoders are lossless at the cost of much higher output size: FFmpeg documentation.
Lossless does not mean the output file is identical to the source. The container, metadata, stream layout, or unsupported features can change. Also, converting a lossy source such as a JPEG into a lossless format cannot restore detail that was already discarded.
Choose a converter for the file type
Audio and video: FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a cross-platform open-source media toolkit that reads many inputs and writes to selected output formats. Its basic command pattern is ffmpeg -i input output. See the FFmpeg manual and official FFmpeg site.

If you only need to change the container and the target supports the source codecs and streams, use stream copy rather than re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4
This copies encoded streams; it does not convert their codecs. It will not work for every source-to-destination combination. If a codec change is necessary, choose an encoder and settings deliberately. A lossless encoder can avoid an additional lossy encoding step, but output size may increase substantially.

Raster images: ImageMagick
ImageMagick’s magick command converts image formats; for example, magick rose.jpg rose.png. Its command-line documentation treats resizing as a separate operation, so avoid resizing or other transformations when the goal is format conversion alone.
Converting a decoded image to PNG can preserve the pixel values available from that decoded source, but it cannot recover information lost in earlier JPEG compression. Check destination capabilities too: JPEG does not support transparency. ImageMagick’s format documentation lists supported formats and special handling notes.

Office documents and other formats
Documents need a format-specific converter; FFmpeg and ImageMagick are not universal document converters. Confirm that the chosen tool supports both the input and output formats and the document features you need to retain.
A safe batch-conversion workflow
- Inventory and protect the originals. Work from copies or retain the source files until you have reviewed the outputs. Note special cases such as multiple audio tracks, subtitles, image transparency, animation, and metadata.
- Choose a tool for the file family. Use FFmpeg for audio and video, ImageMagick for raster images, and a suitable format-specific tool for documents.
- Decide whether to remux or transcode. For a compatible container change, try FFmpeg stream copy with
-c copy. If codecs must change, select a lossless option when fidelity is essential and the storage tradeoff is acceptable. - Convert a representative sample first. Include edge cases, not just the simplest file. Play or render the results and check dimensions, duration, streams, metadata, transparency, and animation as applicable.
- Run the batch into a separate destination. Use an output folder distinct from the originals, decide how to handle filename collisions, and preserve subfolders when needed. Avoid overwriting sources accidentally.
- Review outputs before cleanup. Compare the relevant properties and keep the originals until you are satisfied. A smaller file is not proof of a successful quality-preserving conversion.
Check streams, metadata, and image features
For media files, a successful command does not necessarily mean every track made it into the output. FFmpeg supports explicit stream selection with -map; when explicit mappings are used, metadata behavior can differ from the usual automatic mapping. Verify that required audio tracks, subtitles, and metadata survived rather than assuming they did.

For images, inspect alpha transparency and frame count as well as appearance. ImageMagick notes that APNG may require an explicit apng: format specifier; otherwise it assumes PNG and reads only the first frame. A conversion that keeps only the first frame is not a faithful conversion of an animation.
When a desktop batch interface may help
The community project Media Batch Converter describes a desktop app for image, audio, video, and document batches, with recursive folder processing and output collision options. Its repository also says codec availability depends on installed Pillow and FFmpeg builds, JPEG output uses a white background, and transparency is retained only when the destination supports alpha. These are project statements, not independent verification; features and behavior may vary by release and build. Check the release, source, and checksum before installing, then test with copies of representative files.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using stream copy as if it changed codecs. It copies encoded streams and only suits compatible destination containers.
- Expecting lossless output to restore a lossy source. A format conversion cannot recreate information already lost through compression.
- Judging by file size alone. A smaller lossy output may have discarded data; a larger lossless output is not automatically a problem.
- Checking only appearance or playback. Also verify tracks, metadata, transparency, frame count, and output names when they matter.
- Batching over the originals. Keep a separate destination and retain sources until review is complete.
