You can start and control Google Maps by voice in Android Auto using “Hey Google,” the on-screen microphone, or a compatible steering-wheel voice button. In CarPlay, Google documents an in-app microphone for searching for a stop during a route; Siri is a separate CarPlay voice control, and Google does not document a universal Maps wake phrase for CarPlay.
Android Auto: start Google Maps directions by voice
Connect your phone to Android Auto using your vehicle’s supported setup, then open Google Maps on the car display. Google documents three ways to begin a voice request: say “Hey Google,” tap the microphone on the screen, or use a compatible steering-wheel voice button.
- Start Android Auto and open Google Maps.
- Say “Hey Google,” tap the Maps microphone, or press and hold the steering-wheel voice button until you hear a tone.
- Speak a request, such as “Navigate to [location],” “Directions to [shop name],” “Drive to [address],” “Take me home,” or “Navigate to work.”
- If several places match, confirm the destination you mean.
To end a route, say “Stop navigation.” You can also ask for directions, an estimated arrival time, or live traffic information. Google says Android Auto navigation can provide voice-guided directions, lane guidance, live traffic, and route updates, though availability varies by car and location. See Google’s Android Auto voice-command help.
If you need to type a destination
Android Auto requires the vehicle to be in Park before you type on the car display. While driving, use a supported voice control rather than trying to enter a destination on the screen.

CarPlay: search in Google Maps and use Siri separately
For Google Maps’ documented voice search in CarPlay, start a route first, then use the in-app microphone to find a stop along the way.
- Open Google Maps on the CarPlay display, choose a destination, and tap Go.
- While navigating, tap anywhere on the screen to reveal the top menu bar.
- Choose Add stop, then tap the microphone and speak your search.
This is Google’s documented in-app voice-search route for adding a stop. Its Google Maps CarPlay help page does not describe a universal Google Maps wake phrase for CarPlay.

What Siri does in CarPlay
Apple documents Siri as a separate way to use voice controls in CarPlay. Depending on the vehicle, activate Siri by holding the steering-wheel voice-command button, holding the Dashboard or Home button on the CarPlay screen, or saying “Hey Siri” in a supported vehicle. Apple’s examples include asking for directions to a nearby coffee shop, sharing an ETA, and reporting an accident. These are Siri/CarPlay controls; they are not the same as Google Maps’ in-app microphone flow. See Apple’s CarPlay and Siri instructions.
Published compatibility requirements
Google’s CarPlay help page lists an iPhone 5 or later, iOS 12 or later, Google Maps version 5.24 or later, and a CarPlay-supported vehicle. These are the requirements published on that page; check it and your vehicle documentation for current compatibility.

Gemini and voice-assistant availability
Google’s Android Auto help describes a transition from Assistant to Gemini in 2026, so the assistant experience may differ by availability and setup. Google’s iPhone Maps guidance says, “Gemini isn’t currently available for CarPlay.” That qualification applies to CarPlay and should not be confused with the documented in-app microphone for searching for a stop. Check Google’s Android Auto help and Google’s Maps CarPlay help for current details.
Troubleshoot voice input and navigation audio
Android Auto does not hear you
- When using the steering-wheel button, press and hold it until you hear the tone, then speak.
- Reduce background noise and try the request again.
- If you use an aftermarket receiver, check that its microphone works.
Google lists these checks in its Android Auto troubleshooting guidance.

Navigation directions are too quiet
Some vehicles control navigation, media, and voice volume separately. In CarPlay, Google says to adjust the vehicle’s volume while Maps navigation guidance is speaking. See Google’s CarPlay Maps help.
Voice input is missing or behaves differently
Check which interface and control you are using—Android Auto voice input, Google Maps’ CarPlay microphone, or Siri—and verify that your vehicle, language, region, and current assistant setup support the feature. Google notes that some functions are unavailable in certain languages and regions. Consult your vehicle manual for the steering-wheel controls supported by your car; Google’s Android Auto help and Maps CarPlay help describe platform-specific availability.
