Neither service gives parents the same combination of controls and visibility. ChatGPT can apply an under-18 teen experience and let a linked parent manage selected settings, but OpenAI says that parent cannot read the teen’s conversations. Google lets parents turn Gemini Apps access on or off for a supervised child with Family Link; the reviewed guidance does not establish a universal rule for whether parents can see a child’s chats. Both companies describe content safeguards and warn that they can fail. Which controls are available depends on age, country, account type, product surface and rollout.

How age and eligibility are determined
ChatGPT: an under-18 experience that can use age prediction
OpenAI says eligible personal accounts may receive ChatGPT for Teens when account-provided age information, verified age or age prediction indicates that the user is under 18. Age prediction is not the same as age verification: OpenAI says it may consider broad signals such as topics discussed, times of use, how and when an account is used, and how long it has existed. The company acknowledges that prediction can be wrong; its age-prediction guidance explains the account age category and an age-verification route for some adults identified as teens.
Gemini: local age rules, supervision and feature limits
Google’s stated personal-account age threshold is generally 13 or the applicable local age, not a universal age rule for every country or Gemini surface. Its mobile-app guidance says under-13 access requires parental approval. Work accounts follow separate rules, and some features have higher age requirements. For supervised accounts, Family Link controls Gemini Apps access, but Google says rollout is gradual and that supervised access is unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK according to the reviewed guidance.
What parents can control—and what they can see
ChatGPT: selected settings, not a window into chats
A parent or guardian and teen must link their accounts to use ChatGPT’s parental controls. The parent can manage selected settings, but OpenAI explicitly states that parental controls do not let a parent or guardian read or monitor the teen’s conversations. If OpenAI sends a safety notification, it may provide a short description and an account action related to the event, rather than the teen’s transcript. Gemini: access control through Family Link
For a supervised child, a parent can turn Gemini Apps access on or off through Family Link. That is an access control, not evidence that the parent can view conversations. Google’s reviewed help pages do not settle conversation visibility for every Gemini account configuration, so check the current guidance for the child’s particular account rather than assuming that Family Link either exposes or hides every chat.
How chat activity and privacy settings differ
ChatGPT: model improvement and saved memory are separate controls
Among the settings available through linked parental controls, OpenAI lists whether conversations can help improve models and whether saved memory is used. These settings address different functions; they do not give a parent access to the teen’s chat history. The precise options available may depend on the account and rollout described in OpenAI’s parental-controls help page.

Gemini: Keep activity and broader data processing
Google says Keep activity is unavailable to users under 13 or the applicable local age. That setting should not be treated as a complete summary of Gemini privacy: Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes data processing for service functionality, safety, reliability and service improvement. Because Gemini has multiple product surfaces and account configurations, consult the privacy notice and activity setting for the child’s specific account.
What the safety filters do—and do not promise
ChatGPT’s teen-sensitive content limits
OpenAI lists content areas for which ChatGPT for Teens is intended to reduce exposure, including graphic violence or gore, risky viral challenges, sexual, romantic or violent roleplay, and content promoting extreme beauty ideals, unhealthy dieting or body shaming. Its sensitive-content guidance warns that no system is perfect and that a response may still be inappropriate.

Gemini’s additional filters for minors
Google says additional filters for signed-in minors are designed to limit harmful content. It also describes filters against Gemini claiming to be a person or have human emotions, or role-playing a harmful character. Google warns that children may still encounter content a parent does not want them to see. Its Family Link guidance explains these limits.
These descriptions tell families what each company says its safeguards are designed to do; they do not establish that either service prevents harm or is categorically safer. A filter is not a substitute for a family’s own decisions about access and supervision.

What changes when a teen turns 18?
OpenAI says an account identified as belonging to an adult may leave the teen experience. In that transition, teen protections are turned off by default, and linked parental controls and safety notifications end. The change is rolling out gradually, so it should not be assumed to have reached every account. Details are in OpenAI’s age-18 transition guidance. The reviewed Google pages do not establish an equivalent transition process for Gemini, so no direct comparison of what automatically changes at 18 is supported.
Which differences matter for your family?
- If your main concern is whether a parent can read chats: OpenAI explicitly says linked parents cannot read a teen’s ChatGPT conversations. Google’s reviewed guidance does not provide a complete visibility rule for every Gemini setup.
- If you need to switch a supervised child’s access off: Google documents that option through Family Link, subject to account, region and rollout availability. ChatGPT’s linked parental controls instead manage selected settings; they are not described as a way to inspect chats.
- If your teen’s activity or data use is the concern: compare the specific ChatGPT controls for model improvement and saved memory with Google’s Keep activity setting and privacy information. These controls cover different functions and are not equivalent toggles.
- If your child is near an age threshold: verify the current local eligibility rules and account type. OpenAI’s teen experience can rely on age prediction, while Google’s personal-account rules generally use age 13 or the applicable local threshold, with separate supervision and feature rules.
Country, account type, product surface and rollout can change what a family actually sees. Check the linked official help pages for current availability before relying on a particular setting.
