Can you use ChatGPT for college planning for free?
Yes. Study mode is available across ChatGPT plans globally on web, iOS, and Android. It can guide a learner through questions, step-by-step explanations, and checks for understanding. For example, students can use it to review notes, slides, readings, or a syllabus; create practice questions or flashcard-style review; and work through homework or practice problems. Those study and organization tasks can support college planning, but Study mode is a learning aid—not a dedicated admissions or financial-aid service. The cited OpenAI guidance does not establish that it replaces an admissions adviser or financial-aid professional.

Which features require a subscription?
There is no separate subscription requirement for college planning or Study mode. The distinction is chiefly how much access you have: Free includes various tools with limits, while Plus offers higher limits and expanded access to some tools. Free availability does not mean unlimited use, and Plus does not make every feature unlimited.
What Free can do
- Use Study mode, subject to the account’s plan limits.
- Search the web, upload files or images, analyze data, discover and use GPTs, and create images, with limits that can apply to Free accounts.
What Plus adds
- Higher model limits and faster replies, according to OpenAI’s Plus plan description.
- Expanded access to voice, image generation, file uploads and analysis, and Deep Research where available. These features can still have usage caps.
OpenAI says Study mode does not add messages or bypass the limits attached to your plan. File and image uploads also remain subject to the tools available to your account and their usage limits.

Start with Free if you want to explore Study mode, organize study materials, or use the included tools occasionally. Consider Plus only if you are regularly running into Free limits or need expanded access to a tool that is available on Plus for your account. For example, a student who needs to analyze multiple files or use a higher-limit feature may value the extra access; occasional planning questions alone do not establish a need to pay.
Before upgrading, check your signed-in plan details and model picker. OpenAI says model access, limits, and availability can change, and features may vary by account or location. The current account screen is a better guide to what you will receive than an old feature comparison.
