For an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver, connect Apple TV 4K directly to the system’s HDMI input; Apple says its high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC. For HomePod audio returned from a TV, Apple documents ARC/eARC support on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). A HomePod stereo pair supports Dolby Atmos, while HomePod mini does not support Dolby surround formats.
Does Apple TV 4K support Dolby Atmos?
Yes. Apple lists Dolby Atmos among Apple TV 4K’s supported audio formats, alongside Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1. An HDMI cable is required and sold separately. [Apple TV 4K technical specifications]
Support on the device does not guarantee Atmos in every setup or program. The audio system and connection must be compatible, and the title or app must provide Atmos audio. Apple says supported content may display a Dolby Atmos icon.
What speakers work with Apple TV 4K Dolby Atmos?
Atmos soundbar or AV receiver
Apple recommends wiring Apple TV 4K to the soundbar or receiver first, then connecting that system to the TV. The soundbar or receiver must support Dolby Atmos. If it also carries video to the TV, check that it passes through the video formats you want, such as HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Apple warns that most TVs do not pass Atmos through to soundbars or receivers, and says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC. [Apple’s soundbar and AV receiver setup guide]

- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound

HomePod stereo pair
Apple says a stereo pair of HomePod speakers supports Dolby Atmos when set as Apple TV 4K’s default audio output. For optimal surround sound, Apple recommends placing one speaker on either side of the TV, about 4 feet apart. [Apple TV User Guide: HomePod and Apple TV]
HomePod mini
HomePod mini can be selected as an Apple TV audio output, including for TV audio returned over ARC/eARC on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). However, it is not a Dolby Atmos surround speaker: Apple says HomePod mini does not support Dolby surround formats and renders those formats in mono or stereo. How should you connect Apple TV 4K to an Atmos soundbar or receiver?
- Connect Apple TV 4K’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the Atmos soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the sound system’s HDMI output to the TV.
- Confirm that the system supports Dolby Atmos and, if video passes through it, the TV video formats you use.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and check for Dolby Atmos under Immersive Audio. Check supported content for the Dolby Atmos icon.
- Turn on Quick Start at Settings > Apps > iTunes Films and TV Shows > Quick Start, which Apple says is required for Atmos playback.
These directions reflect Apple’s soundbar and receiver guidance, published March 18, 2025. If the receiver or soundbar cannot pass through the desired video format, Apple describes connecting Apple TV to the TV for video instead; you must then verify that your particular TV and audio hardware provide a compatible audio path. [Apple’s soundbar and AV receiver setup guide]
Can Apple TV 4K pass Dolby Atmos through my TV?
Do not assume that it can. Apple says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC and that most TVs do not support Atmos pass-through to soundbars or receivers. A TV’s ARC port alone is therefore not enough to establish that Apple TV audio will reach an external Atmos sound system.

Apple documents a separate ARC/eARC route for HomePod: Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) connects to an ARC/eARC-capable TV, which returns TV audio to HomePod or HomePod mini. This HomePod feature should not be confused with ARC pass-through to a conventional soundbar or receiver. [Apple’s ARC/eARC instructions]
Do you need eARC for Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K?
Not for Apple’s recommended direct HDMI connection to an Atmos soundbar or receiver. That path connects Apple TV to the sound system, rather than relying on the TV to return audio over ARC.

For the documented TV-to-HomePod audio-return feature, the TV must support ARC or eARC; Apple specifies Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later). Follow Apple’s setup instructions to select the HomePod room as the default audio output, then open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output > Audio Return Channel and choose Play Television Audio. If it does not work, check the TV’s ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC settings and consult the TV manufacturer’s instructions. Apple specifies an eARC-compatible HDMI cable for its eARC setup. - Connection: For an Atmos soundbar or receiver, connect Apple TV 4K directly to its HDMI input rather than expecting ARC to carry Apple TV’s high-bandwidth Atmos.
- Settings: Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and look for Dolby Atmos under Immersive Audio. If the option is missing, Apple says the home entertainment setup may need to change.
- Content: Check whether the title or app offers Atmos; supported content may show a Dolby Atmos icon.
- Quick Start: Verify it is on under Settings > Apps > iTunes Films and TV Shows > Quick Start.
- HomePod return audio: Confirm the TV supports ARC/eARC, the relevant TV settings are enabled, the HomePod room is the default output, and Play Television Audio is selected.
