Google said some widely shared screenshots of bizarre AI Search answers were fabricated or could not be reproduced. It also admitted that real errors appeared in AI Overviews, including answers it described as odd, inaccurate or unhelpful. The May 2024 controversy was therefore neither proof that every viral example was genuine nor a case of criticism built entirely on fakes.
What Google was accused of—and what it said
The dispute concerned AI Overviews, Google Search summaries generated with AI and rolled out broadly in May 2024. On May 30, Google Search chief Liz Reid published an account of the problems and the company’s response. She acknowledged: “Some odd, inaccurate or unhelpful AI Overviews certainly did show up.”
Reid also said Google had seen “a very large number of faked screenshots.” Addressing some especially extreme examples, she wrote: “Those AI Overviews never appeared. So we’d encourage anyone encountering these screenshots to do a search themselves to check.” Futurism’s May 31 report focused on this pushback against viral claims, while noting that the company had acknowledged genuine failures too.
Were the viral screenshots real?
Not all of them. Google said some circulated screenshots were fake, doctored or could not be reproduced. Futurism reported that extreme examples—including a claim that doctors recommended smoking during pregnancy—were likely fabricated or unverified. One such post reportedly received 9.9 million views on X; that is a measure of the post’s reach, not evidence that Google Search produced the answer.

But dismissing every strange answer as a fake would also be inaccurate. On May 24, the Associated Press reported an AI Overview answer to a question about cats on the Moon that invented a story about astronauts meeting and caring for cats. AP also consulted experts about how subtle omissions in emergency or health advice could create risks. The evidence supports a mixed conclusion: some viral examples were not authentic, while at least one striking false answer was independently reported.
What was wrong with the real answers?
Confident-sounding claims without a sound factual basis
The cats-on-the-Moon answer illustrates the basic problem: an AI-generated summary can present invented information in the form of a direct answer. A fluent answer is not proof that its claims are true, even when it appears at the top of a familiar search page.

Safety advice can fail through omissions, too
For health and emergency queries, the risk is not limited to an obviously absurd sentence. A summary that leaves out an important qualification or step can mislead while sounding plausible. AP’s expert discussions highlighted this concern. The available reporting does not establish a comprehensive error rate or show how often such omissions occurred.
How Google said it responded
Google described more than a dozen technical improvements, according to the Associated Press. The changes included:
- Improving detection of nonsensical queries that could trigger poor summaries.
- Reducing reliance on user-generated material, including content from Reddit.
- Showing AI Overviews less often in situations where users had not found them helpful.
- Strengthening safeguards intended to disable summaries on important topics such as health.
These are measures Google said it had taken; they are not, by themselves, independent proof that the failures were eliminated. Google’s May 14, 2024 launch announcement had said hundreds of millions of users would receive the feature, with the company expecting to reach more than one billion by the end of that year. That scale made the quality and safeguards consequential, but it does not tell us how often answers were wrong.

Treat an AI Overview as a starting point, not a verified authority—especially when the answer could affect health, safety, money or another important decision. Check the linked pages themselves, look for agreement among reliable sources, and confirm that a summary has not omitted a crucial condition. If the answer is surprising or consequential, do not rely on the summary alone.

The 2024 reporting establishes serious failures and Google’s announced changes, but not a universally audited error rate or definitive proof that the system is now error-free. Google later reported higher user satisfaction, more queries and slightly more quality clicks with AI Overviews and AI Mode. Those are company-reported metrics, not an independent audit of factual accuracy.
