To view a Zoom screen share beside participant video, join the meeting, wait for someone to share, then select View in the upper-right corner and choose a side-by-side layout. You can drag the divider to give more space to the shared content or the video tiles. Zoom’s instructions apply to its desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux; the feature does not work while the dual-monitors setting is enabled.
Turn on side-by-side mode during a meeting
- Join or start a Zoom meeting in the desktop app.
- Wait until a participant begins sharing their screen.
- Click View in the upper-right corner of the meeting window.
- Choose a side-by-side view: Speaker, Gallery, Dynamic Gallery, or Multi-speaker. The available choices depend on your app and meeting context. Zoom Support’s side-by-side instructions describe the viewer layout and its requirements.
Side-by-side mode is a layout for you as a viewer: the shared screen appears alongside meeting video. Zoom describes it as letting participants viewing a shared screen see it alongside Speaker, Gallery, or Multi-speaker view, depending on the chosen layout.
Choose the video layout and resize the split
The layout controls what appears in the video area; the divider controls how much room that area gets relative to the shared content.

To change the balance, move the pointer over the divider between shared content and video until it becomes a double arrow, then click and drag. Shift it toward the shared screen to give that content more space, or toward the video area to enlarge the tiles.

Enter side-by-side mode automatically when sharing starts
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop app.
- Open the profile menu and choose Settings.
- Open Share screen.
- Turn on See shared content in side-by-side mode.
Zoom says this setting automatically enters side-by-side mode when another participant starts sharing. The setting is documented for the desktop app; Zoom’s settings guide describes the option.
Requirements and behavior when you leave the layout
- Zoom lists its desktop app for Windows, macOS, or Linux as a requirement. Its support article gives the general minimum as “Global minimum version or higher” without naming a numeric version.
- Side-by-side mode does not work when the dual-monitors setting is enabled.
- Multi-speaker requires Zoom Workplace desktop app version 6.0.0 or later on Windows or macOS, according to Zoom Support.
- When you leave side-by-side mode in a windowed meeting, video thumbnails appear above the shared content. In fullscreen, they appear over the content near the upper-right and can be moved by dragging.
Set the attendee view in a webinar
Webinar hosts can choose the attendee layout from View: under attendee view, select side-by-side Speaker or Gallery. This controls the attendee view rather than simply changing the host’s own video layout.

Do not confuse viewer side-by-side mode with presenter layout
Viewer side-by-side mode is selected from your meeting’s View menu while someone else shares. Zoom also has a presenter layout named Side by side, configured by the person sharing from the Presenter layout panel in the share modal. That presenter arrangement places the presenter’s video beside shared content, with wallpaper filling unused space or black if no wallpaper is chosen. It applies only to sharing options that support presenter layouts. See Zoom Support’s presenter-layout instructions.
