Those figures describe storage used on the device; they are not a minimum total-capacity requirement for an iPhone.
How much storage does Apple Intelligence use?
Apple describes the storage amounts as “up to” figures, not a fixed amount that every device must reserve. The amount depends on the device category and model. For the next-generation features covered by Apple’s current requirements, the published allowances are:

These are maximums Apple gives for the listed categories, not a promise that every device will use the maximum. Apple’s page does not specify a single exact amount for every model. See Apple’s current Apple Intelligence system requirements for the live details.
Storage is not the same as iPhone eligibility
Having enough free space does not make every iPhone compatible. Apple separately limits Apple Intelligence to supported devices. Its current list includes iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. An older iPhone does not become eligible just because it has plenty of unused storage.

Apple can update its compatible-device list as software changes, so check the current support requirements for the exact model you own.
Other requirements for the next generation
Install the required software
The next-generation features described on Apple’s current support page require iOS 27 on iPhone; corresponding 27-series releases apply to other supported Apple platforms. A compatible model on older software may not have access to this feature set.

Match the device and Siri languages
Set the device language and Siri language to the same language, and make sure that language is supported. Apple notes that changing Siri’s language can temporarily make Apple Intelligence unavailable while the language downloads.
Check regional and feature availability
Availability varies by feature, platform, language, and region. Apple says the next-generation features are broadly available in supported languages and regions, but it also documents restrictions involving devices purchased in mainland China and certain devices used there with a China mainland Apple Account region. Its September 14, 2026 announcement likewise cautions that some features may not be available in every region or language.

Can iCloud or an external drive solve a storage problem?
Apple’s stated allowance is for device storage, and its eligibility rules separately specify compatible models. The cited requirements do not say that cloud storage or an external drive can replace on-device storage or make an unsupported iPhone compatible. If your iPhone is supported, freeing local space may help with available capacity; it does not change the model, software, language, or regional requirements.
What to do if your iPhone is supported
- Confirm the exact model. Compare it with Apple’s current supported-device list.
- Update to the required software. For the next-generation features covered here, Apple specifies iOS 27.
- Check free device storage. Allow for the relevant “up to” amount shown for your device category; Apple does not publish a universal fixed minimum for every iPhone.
- Verify language and region settings. Make sure device and Siri languages match and that the feature is available for your language and location.
Does an unsupported iPhone need to be replaced?
Only if access to Apple Intelligence is a priority and you want to use it on an iPhone: Apple’s current list includes iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. A storage accessory or more cloud capacity is not established as a way to add eligibility. If you already have a supported iPhone, an upgrade is not required solely because Apple lists a storage allowance; first check your available local space and the other requirements.
