There is no single current CSS release called “CSS5.” CSS is developed as a set of separate modules, each of which can progress and receive its own level designation. “Level 5” may accurately describe a module such as CSS Color Module Level 5, but it does not mean that a unified fifth version of CSS has arrived.
The useful way to think about CSS is: one language, many modules, separate levels, and periodic snapshots that collect specifications at a point in time.
Why “CSS5” is not a single release
CSS describes how structured documents are presented or rendered, and the W3C identifies it as part of the open web platform (W3C’s CSS overview). Early CSS specifications were more consolidated. Since CSS Level 2, the CSS Working Group has developed the language modularly: different areas are specified separately and can progress at different rates (CSS Snapshot 2025).
That means CSS does not have one shared release number that advances only when every feature is ready. A module may have a level number of its own, while another part of CSS is at a different level or status. MDN uses CSS Color Module Level 5 as an example of a module-level label, not a unified CSS5 release (MDN: CSS).

What a CSS Snapshot tells you—and what it doesn’t
A W3C CSS Snapshot gathers specifications into a view of CSS at a particular time. The W3C publications listing records CSS Snapshot 2026 as published on 22 June 2026 (CSS Working Group publications). A snapshot is a dated reference point, not a new monolithic language version.
Most importantly, a snapshot’s criteria are not a measure of what browsers support. The CSS Working Group’s CSS Snapshot 2025 says: “The primary audience is CSS implementers, not CSS authors, as this definition includes modules by specification stability, not Web browser adoption rate.” That Group Note was published on 18 September 2025 (CSS Snapshot 2025).

So a module’s appearance in a snapshot, or its level number, cannot by itself tell you whether a feature works in the browser and environment you care about.
How to check what a CSS feature means for your project
- Identify the feature and its module. Look for the specific specification, such as CSS Color, rather than relying on a broad “CSS5” label. The W3C CSS overview links to current module work (W3C’s CSS overview).
- Check the module’s level and specification status. A level belongs to that module. It is not a version number for all of CSS. The W3C’s current work listing includes CSS Color Module Level 5 (CSS Working Group publications).
- Check support in the actual target browser. Do not infer browser adoption from a snapshot or specification level. Verify the feature against the browser and version your project must support.
- Inspect the result in browser developer tools. In Chrome DevTools, select the relevant element and use the Styles view to inspect or change CSS rules; use Computed to see the final computed styles. These views help diagnose which declarations are applying and what values the browser resolves (Chrome DevTools CSS features reference).
How to read “CSS Level 5” claims
When you see “CSS5,” first ask whether the writer means a particular module, a snapshot, or a general collection of newer CSS features. Those are different things. A claim about a module’s Level 5 specification should identify that module and its status; a claim about browser behavior should identify the feature and browser support. Without that detail, “CSS5” is too broad to establish what is specified or usable.
