If Google Messages is asking you to use your phone, the reason depends on what you’re trying to do. You can use Google Messages without signing in to a Google Account, but pairing Messages for web is set up from the phone app and uses the same account in the browser. A Google Account verification challenge and RCS phone-number verification are separate processes.
First identify which sign-in or verification prompt you’re seeing
Google Messages can ask for different kinds of access information in different parts of the app. Match the prompt to the task before troubleshooting:
| What you’re trying to do | What may be requested | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Use basic Google Messages features | A Google Account is not required. Some account-linked features may be unavailable. | Google Messages app |
| Read and send messages in a computer browser | Use the phone app to start pairing, then use the same Google Account on the computer or tablet. | Phone app’s Device Pairing and Messages for web |
| Create or sign in to a Google Account | Google may ask you to verify a phone number. | Google Account sign-in or account creation |
| Enable RCS chats | Your phone number may need verification for RCS; this is not necessarily a Google Account password issue. | RCS settings in Google Messages |
The exact cause cannot be identified from “account login” alone. The wording on the screen and the action that triggered it are the best clues.
Using Google Messages without a Google Account
A Google Account is not mandatory for basic use. Google Messages Help says, “You can use Google Messages without your Google Account, but you can’t share a profile.” Without an account, some features—including Device Pairing, Magic Compose, and Gemini—may also be unavailable. See Google’s explanation of account and profile sharing in Google Messages.

If the request appears while you are trying to use a feature that is unavailable without an account, you can either sign in or continue without that feature. If you only want to use the app for messaging, the account prompt does not mean every Google Messages function requires a Google Account.
Why Messages for web uses your phone
Messages for web is paired through the Google Messages app on an Android phone. Google’s documented setup starts on the phone, then asks you to sign in to the browser with the same Google Account selected for pairing. This is a requirement of the web-pairing workflow, not a universal sign-in requirement for the phone app.

Google lists these requirements for the phone-side setup: the latest version of Google Messages, a Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection, and Android 5.0 or higher. Its instructions support pairing a phone with a computer or Android tablet. Only one computer can be active at a time, and a browser pairing may be removed automatically after a few weeks of inactivity; Google does not specify a more exact interval on the help page. Check Google’s Messages for web setup instructions for the current steps.
Pair Messages for web
- On your phone, open Google Messages.
- Open the account menu and choose Device Pairing.
- If prompted, select the Google Account you want to use.
- On the computer or tablet, open Messages for web and sign in with that same Google Account.
- Complete the pairing steps shown on screen.
Fix a Messages for web account or connection problem
If pairing does not complete, check the account and connection separately. Google’s computer troubleshooting guidance recommends confirming that Google Messages is signed in on the phone and that the browser uses the same account.

- If you do not see your account image during setup, select Switch to Google Account pairing if that option appears.
- Check that the phone and computer or tablet have internet access. For an existing pairing that will not connect, check whether background data is available to Google Messages.
- If you recently reset or replaced your phone, unpair the old web session before pairing the new phone.
Follow Google’s steps for fixing Messages connection problems on a computer if those checks do not resolve it.
When Google Account verification asks for a phone number
A phone-number check during Google Account creation or sign-in is separate from pairing Messages for web. Google Account Help says verification is sometimes required to confirm that a person is creating or accessing the account. If the verification text is delayed, Google suggests waiting or trying a phone call. Text and call charges depend on your phone plan. If Google says the number cannot be used or has been used too many times, its guidance is to try another number; acceptance of a particular number is not guaranteed. Read Google’s account-verification guidance.

When the prompt is about RCS phone-number verification
RCS has its own phone-number verification state. For example, the status “Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry” points to an RCS connection or phone-number verification issue; it does not by itself mean your Google Account password is wrong. Google Messages also has a Phone Number Verification setting for automatic verification, with an option to turn it off. See Google’s instructions for turning on RCS chats and its account and profile settings information.
