Apple’s official Mac feature is called Spotlight, not “SpaceLight.” Apple’s current Mac User Guide documents Spotlight search, result actions, calculations, conversions, lookups, clipboard history, and Siri requests. There is no authoritative confirmation in the sources available here of a separate Apple feature or announcement named SpaceLight.
What’s new in Spotlight on Mac?
Apple’s current Mac User Guide describes Spotlight as a built-in search tool for apps, files, email, messages, and other content. It also documents actions you can take from search results, plus calculations, unit conversions, dictionary lookups, clipboard history search, and asking Siri from Spotlight when Siri AI is available. Apple’s guide labels Siri AI as beta and lists device, language, and region qualifications, so availability should be checked against Apple’s current requirements.
Apple Developer search results also surfaced updates dated June and July 2026 describing natural-language search across indexed app content and making app-indexed content available to Foundation models. The developer page requires JavaScript to view; those search-result descriptions do not establish further implementation details. Apple Developer updates

How Spotlight indexing works—and what that means for privacy
Spotlight searches a local index. Apple says the index stays on the device and is not shared with Apple or other devices. Indexing takes place during device setup, after a software update or upgrade, and as data on the device changes. Apple Support: If Spotlight isn’t finding expected results on Mac
After setup or an update, a full index may take hours or even days to build, depending on how much data is on the Mac; Apple describes this as guidance, not a measured average. Incremental updates are faster. Apple says indexing tends to finish sooner when the Mac is idle and connected to power, and when it has Wi-Fi or Ethernet if data needs to be downloaded.

What to do if Spotlight can’t find a file
- Install available macOS updates. Apple recommends checking for the latest software updates before troubleshooting further.
- Check the search categories. Open System Settings and look for Spotlight or Siri & Spotlight; the label varies by macOS version. Confirm the relevant content type is enabled.
- Reindex the affected location. In Spotlight’s Search Privacy settings, add the disk or folder that is missing results, then remove it. This prompts Spotlight to index that location again.
- Wait for indexing to finish. The time depends on the amount of data, and permission issues can prevent some content from being reindexed.
Apple documents these steps in its Spotlight troubleshooting guidance.
