Yes—Google has now announced a combined platform, called Googlebook OS. The story began with a Google executive’s 2025 statement that ChromeOS and Android would be combined, but the practical picture is clearer today: Google describes Googlebook OS as bringing together ChromeOS and the Android tech stack. That does not mean every Chromebook will switch to it. Google says many newer devices may qualify, but has not yet published the model-by-model eligibility list or migration paths.
What did the Google executive say?
In a TechRadar interview published July 11, 2025, Sameer Samat, Google’s President of Android Ecosystem, said: “I asked because we’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they’re getting done.” TechRadar’s interview report was the basis for the headline-making claim. It was a reported interview remark, not a detailed Google product announcement.
Google had already outlined a technical change in June 2024: ChromeOS would incorporate portions of Android’s technology stack, including the Android Linux kernel and frameworks. Google said the work was intended to speed AI and other innovation, simplify engineering, and improve how Chromebooks work with phones and accessories. It also said the changes had begun but would take “quite some time” to reach consumers, while ChromeOS updates would continue in the meantime. Google’s 2024 announcement established the technical direction, not a date for a consumer-facing replacement.
On July 15, 2025, Chrome Unboxed reproduced a clarification Samat posted on X: “To reiterate what we announced in our 2024 blog post: we’re building the ChromeOS experience on top of Android underlying technology to unlock new levels of performance, iterate faster, & make your laptop + phone work better together. I’m excited about it!” The reported clarification connects his interview comment to the previously announced stack work. It does not retract his “single platform” wording.

What is Googlebook OS?
By September 2026, Google had announced Googlebook OS as a new operating system that “brings together the best of ChromeOS and the Android tech stack.” That is a more concrete, user-facing step than the 2024 plan to incorporate Android components into ChromeOS. Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education guidance, updated September 23, 2026, says the initial rollout is for consumers.
The available description supports calling Googlebook OS a combined platform. It does not establish that ChromeOS and Android will become identical in every respect, or provide a complete account of how apps, settings, updates, or individual device hardware will work after migration. Google has not yet published device eligibility details or migration paths.

Will existing Chromebooks get Googlebook OS?
Possibly, but not all are confirmed. Google says many newer Chromebooks may be eligible to transition and that it will share model eligibility and migration details later. Until those details are published, do not assume that a particular Chromebook will receive Googlebook OS.
Google separately says current ChromeOS devices will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetimes. Google Cloud reiterated a general commitment to 10 years of automatic ChromeOS updates in a May 13, 2026 post; for an individual Chromebook, its model-specific support lifecycle is the relevant check. Google Cloud’s statement and Google’s device guidance should not be read as a promise that every device gets the same migration option.

Should you buy a Chromebook now or wait?
A current Chromebook remains a reasonable purchase if it meets your needs and its supported lifetime is acceptable. Google says Chromebooks remain available and supported; Google Cloud described them as a reliable choice for schools and businesses. Check the specific model’s update-support end date before buying, and treat Googlebook migration as unconfirmed unless Google lists that model.
If you want the new platform specifically, wait for an actual Googlebook model listing that confirms availability, price, and what software and support it includes. September 2026 launch coverage named Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo as Googlebook partners, but partner names alone do not confirm that a particular model is available or that an existing Chromebook will transition to it.

Is Googlebook ready for schools and businesses?
Not as a fully managed fleet platform at launch. Google says the initial Googlebook rollout is for consumer use and that it does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. Comprehensive Googlebook fleet-management capabilities are planned to begin rolling out in the second half of 2027. Schools and businesses can continue deploying Chromebooks, which Google says remain available and receive updates for their supported lifetimes.
