D-ID’s real-time avatar is the visible endpoint of a conversation pipeline: speech recognition and turn detection feed a language model, optional knowledge retrieval and speech synthesis, and finally an avatar streamed to a client. Developers can integrate the front-end with D-ID’s SDK or use its Agents Streams routes; D-ID marks the older Talks and Clips streaming endpoints as legacy for new projects.

How D-ID turns input into a talking avatar

D-ID describes its real-time agents as conversational AI delivered through an avatar over WebRTC. In a voice conversation, the documented flow is:

  1. Speech-to-text (STT): converts a user’s speech into text.
  2. Turn detection: determines when the user’s turn is complete.
  3. Language model (LLM): generates a response. D-ID’s overview lists OpenAI and Google among provider options.
  4. Knowledge retrieval: optionally supplies relevant information from an agent’s knowledge base.
  5. Text-to-speech (TTS): optionally converts the response into speech; D-ID lists ElevenLabs and Azure.
  6. Avatar rendering and streaming: D-ID renders the response through the selected avatar and streams it to the client.

D-ID identifies STT, turn detection and avatar rendering as required components; the LLM, knowledge retrieval and TTS can be configured or omitted. An application can send text or audio chunks over WebRTC without using an LLM or TTS. See D-ID’s Realtime Overview for the current component descriptions.

“Real-time” describes the interactive streaming experience, not a published performance guarantee. D-ID uses marketing terms such as “ultra-low latency,” but its reviewed materials do not provide a latency measurement, test conditions or benchmark. That language should not be treated as independently verified performance.

Which avatar families and streaming routes does D-ID document?

D-ID’s SDK overview distinguishes three avatar families and their documented streaming approaches. These are product descriptions, not comparative performance tests.

Family Presenter type Documented streaming approach Notable documented capability
Talks V2 Photo-based presenters WebRTC Photo-based avatar streaming
Clips V3 Pre-built presenters WebRTC Streaming with a pre-built presenter
Expressives V4 Expressive avatars LiveKit-based streaming Microphone input and always-on fluent mode

The exact presenter, provider and feature compatibility can vary. Check the Agents SDK overview and current API reference for the avatar and configuration you intend to deploy.

Choose an integration model

D-ID positions its SDK in the front end. Create agents and knowledge bases through Studio or the API, then choose how the client obtains and uses a session.

Embed the prebuilt interface

D-ID’s widget can use client keys restricted to specified allowed domains and agents. D-ID says these keys are limited to session creation and cannot edit agents. This is the least custom approach when the embedded interface meets the product’s needs. Review the Realtime Overview for its client-key security guidance.

Create the session and token on your backend

Your server creates the session and token, then passes the token to the browser or client to connect to the stream. This keeps session setup on your application backend rather than exposing that setup in the client flow.

Build a custom client with the SDK

For control over layout, user experience and integrations, D-ID documents the @d-id/client-sdk library. The SDK handles the client-side integration; agent and knowledge-base creation remain Studio or API tasks. See the Agents SDK overview.

Use Agents Streams directly

Teams that need to own more of the streaming integration can use Agents Streams rather than the SDK-managed client flow. For new implementations, D-ID recommends the Agents SDK or Agents Streams, rather than starting with the older Talks/Clips streaming endpoints.

What can developers configure?

D-ID’s agent API configuration goes beyond the avatar and voice. The current reference documents an avatar presenter, model configuration, optional RAG knowledge base, suggested starter questions, greetings, user data, embed availability, event triggers, media assets and a pronunciation dictionary. These options let developers shape what the agent can answer and how an interaction is presented, not just how its face looks.

The API reference lists OpenAI, Google, OpenAI External, Azure OpenAI External, D-ID GPT OSS and Custom among LLM configuration choices. It specifies that D-ID and Google providers are supported only with Expressive Avatar presenters. Provider availability and other presenter-specific constraints can change, so verify the exact combination in the Agents API reference before implementation. The listed options should not be read as a promise that every provider works with every avatar.

Should an existing Talks or Clips integration be migrated?

D-ID’s Clips Streams Overview calls the Talks/Clips Live Streaming API endpoints legacy. It says existing integrations remain supported, while recommending the Agents SDK or Agents Streams for new development. D-ID also says new features will be released only for the newer paths. The legacy flow covers operations such as creating a stream, exchanging SDP/ICE connection details, handling avatar responses and LLM chat, then closing the stream; the newer options provide updated routes for those tasks.

For an existing integration, “still supported” is not the same as “recommended for a new build.” Consult D-ID’s Clips Streams Overview to map the old flow to the newer SDK functions or Agents Streams endpoints.

How usage and plan costs work

D-ID’s AI Agents page states that agent usage is charged at 0.5 credit for every 15 seconds of generated video response. This is the vendor’s stated usage meter, not a complete estimate of total project cost. The page also says an API is available to D-ID Studio account holders. Check D-ID’s AI Agents page for current product and usage details.

Plan allowances and commercial terms are separate from that per-response meter. D-ID’s API pricing page displays plan-level video and streaming allowances, but prices, limits and entitlements can change and may depend on billing choice, region or account terms. Confirm current prices, allowance, watermark status, commercial license and avatar count on the live pricing page before budgeting or committing to a use case.

The reviewed D-ID product terms PDF is dated 2024-07-18 and describes trial access as time-limited and non-commercial, with paid use governed by a price list that may be amended. Because that document may have been superseded, it is not enough to establish the terms for a current account. Check the applicable terms and plan before relying on trial or commercial-use permissions: D-ID Terms of Service dated 2024-07-18.

What the documentation does—and does not—establish

D-ID’s product and API documentation establishes the company’s described pipeline, integration options and configuration surface. It does not establish comparative avatar quality, speech accuracy, engagement, comprehension or reliability through independently described tests. A photorealistic or expressive presentation should not be mistaken for evidence that the underlying language model is more accurate.

Microphone input is a documented option for Expressives V4, not a requirement for all agents. D-ID does not name or require a particular microphone; the relevant input and interaction depend on the application and avatar route.
