The robot in the 2017 headline is ERICA, a Japanese conversational android developed as a research platform for studying humanlike conversation and social interaction. Its developers documented speech, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, and touch as ways to communicate. The old headline’s “world’s most sophisticated” label is not a verified ranking of robots today.
What is ERICA?
ERICA stands for ERato Intelligent Conversational Android. It was developed through a Japanese research effort involving Osaka University, Kyoto University, and the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR). A 2017 Futurism article introduced ERICA in connection with National Geographic’s miniseries Year Million.
ERICA is a research platform, not a general-purpose home assistant or a commercially deployed domestic robot. Osaka University describes its purpose as exploring how an android can interact naturally with people and participate socially in daily life. That is a research goal, not a claim that ERICA is ready to perform everyday household tasks.
What can ERICA do?
The platform was designed around multimodal conversation: interaction that uses more than spoken words. Osaka University’s Intelligent Robotics Laboratory lists voice, bodily gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, and touch as communication methods. The broader JST ERATO program likewise studied how social robots might communicate with multiple people through language, movement, expression, gaze, and contact.

In a 2015 announcement, Osaka University said ERICA integrated voice recognition, movement generation, and robot-control technologies to support natural conversation in limited situations. “Limited” matters: this describes a research system, not unrestricted conversation or general intelligence.
What do the demonstrations and studies show?
Research conversation scenarios
Osaka University describes research using ERICA in a counseling-style scenario, where the robot listens to a client, and a job-interview scenario, where it asks questions. These were experimental roles used to investigate conversational control, including multimodal and multi-robot conversation. They do not establish that ERICA provides counseling or operates as a production hiring system.

A short waiting-room experiment
A JST announcement describes a brief verification experiment in which ERICA conversed with a visitor in a waiting room. The researchers reported an increase in the visitor’s perceived presence of the robot. That finding concerns a short interaction and a perception measure; it does not show that people mistake ERICA for a person.
Evaluation with older participants
A 2021 paper abstract reports evaluation conversations with 40 senior participants. The conversations lasted five to seven minutes without a breakdown. This is evidence about one described evaluation, not proof of open-ended, human-level conversation or performance across all people and settings.

How sophisticated is ERICA technically?
Published specifications use different measures, so they should not be collapsed into one figure. Osaka University’s 2015 platform announcement reports 19 pneumatic actuators. An undated Intelligent Robotics Laboratory page lists 44 degrees of freedom. Actuator count and degrees of freedom are not the same measurement, and the pages reflect different date and configuration contexts.
The numbers help describe the platform, but they do not by themselves establish a robot’s overall sophistication. A meaningful comparison would also need to define conversational ability, autonomy and task scope, perception, movement and manipulation, safety around people, and real-world deployment. The available sources do not provide a standardized, current head-to-head comparison on those axes.

Is ERICA still the world’s most sophisticated humanoid robot?
There is no basis in the cited material for calling ERICA the world’s most sophisticated humanoid robot today. That wording belongs to the framing of a May 17, 2017 Futurism headline, and the sources considered here do not establish a present-day global ranking.
A more precise description is that ERICA is a notable conversational-android research platform. Its documented focus is human-robot conversation and social interaction—not a demonstrated lead in every area of humanoid robotics. The JST ERATO research program ran from July 2014 through March 2020, with a special extension through March 2021; those dates describe the program, not a current ranking or an end to all work on ERICA.
