What video sizes does Google Vids support?
Google Vids supports three aspect ratios: vertical 9:16, square 1:1, and widescreen 16:9. Google announced the vertical and square formats on October 10, 2025, describing them as options for content destined for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok. Google Workspace Updates
- 9:16 vertical: Use this when you want a full-screen, portrait composition for TikTok or YouTube Shorts.
- 1:1 square: A square format for social content where a square frame is preferred.
- 16:9 widescreen: The existing landscape format, suited to conventional widescreen video.
Choosing 9:16 at the start lets you frame shots for a phone screen rather than relying on a later crop from a wider composition. It does not guarantee that a platform will classify or distribute a video in any particular way.
Can Google Vids make a video for TikTok without cropping?
Yes. Start a project in 9:16 and compose the scene in that portrait frame. Since the project itself is vertical, you do not have to create a 16:9 video first and crop it to fit a phone-shaped canvas. The result is a video file you can upload to TikTok through its normal upload flow; Google’s announcement names TikTok as a destination for vertical or square content, but the Vids product page specifically identifies direct export only for YouTube.

Does Google Vids export directly to YouTube Shorts?
Google says finished Vids videos can be exported directly to YouTube. Its product page does not separately promise a Shorts-specific publishing button or automatic Shorts classification. You can create the video in 9:16 and export it to YouTube, then check how it is categorized under YouTube’s current rules. For TikTok, use the exported file with TikTok’s upload flow. What size and length should I use for a YouTube Short?
For a portrait, full-screen Short, use 9:16 in Vids. YouTube’s classification is not determined by aspect ratio alone: its help documentation says square or vertical uploads up to three minutes are categorized as Shorts subject to stated upload-date, channel, and content conditions. YouTube also documents a policy change dated September 24, 2026: new Shorts longer than one minute but shorter than three minutes that have an active Content ID claim may remain playable instead of being automatically blocked. This is a YouTube rights and policy issue, not a Vids export setting.
Can Vids generate vertical AI clips?
Yes. Google announced on January 13, 2026 that Ingredients to Video in Vids supports portrait-sized clips. The announcement lists Google Workspace and Google AI plan availability and says the rollout completed within one to three days. Google Workspace Updates

Google also said Veo 3.1 supports native 9:16 generation for platforms such as YouTube Shorts, with rollout to Google Vids, Flow, the Gemini API, and Vertex AI. Google’s October 2025 announcement listed the new aspect ratios for all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and people using personal Google accounts. Google’s current product information says creating and editing Vids is desktop-only; videos can be viewed on desktop and mobile. Vids supports videos up to 30 minutes. Google Vids product page

Google’s April 2, 2026 announcement said anyone with a Google account could generate up to 10 Veo 3.1 clips per month at no cost, with additional capabilities for paid Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. How to make and publish a vertical video in Vids
- Open Vids on a desktop computer. Google’s product information limits project creation and editing to desktop.
- Choose a 9:16 vertical project. Use this aspect ratio for portrait content intended for TikTok or a full-screen YouTube Short.
- Build the video for the portrait frame. Keep important people, text, and action within the vertical composition rather than expecting a later crop to preserve them.
- Export the finished video. Use Vids’ direct YouTube export if you are publishing there. For TikTok, upload the exported file through TikTok’s standard workflow.
- Check YouTube’s Shorts rules and publishing details. Confirm the final aspect ratio and duration, and account for YouTube’s current eligibility and rights policies.
