Apple has not disclosed a payment to OpenAI for bringing ChatGPT into Apple experiences. A 2024 report said neither company paid the other, but that was attributed reporting—not an official confirmation. “Paying in exposure” is a shorthand for the distribution OpenAI gained, not a disclosed contract term or a measured cash-equivalent value.

What did Apple and OpenAI announce?

On June 10, 2024, Apple announced that ChatGPT would be integrated into Siri and its systemwide Writing Tools in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Siri could offer ChatGPT when it was useful, and Writing Tools’ Compose feature could use ChatGPT to generate images. Apple said users would be asked before questions, documents, or photos were sent to ChatGPT. The arrangement let people access ChatGPT through Apple’s built-in experiences rather than switching apps. Apple’s announcement and OpenAI’s announcement describe the integration and its launch terms.

OpenAI said people could use ChatGPT through Apple without an account, while subscribers could connect their accounts to access paid features. That setup gave OpenAI a potential route from free use to paid accounts, but the announcements did not say how many people converted or how much revenue the integration generated.

Apple’s launch announcement described Apple Intelligence as free and named iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac models with M1 or later among compatible hardware. Those are launch-era details, not a current compatibility list; device and software availability can change over time and by region.

Did Apple pay OpenAI, or did OpenAI pay Apple?

The companies did not publish a fee, revenue-sharing percentage, or cash-transfer arrangement in their announcements. A 2024 report by The Information, citing a person familiar with the deal, said neither Apple nor OpenAI was paying the other for the iPhone integration. The report described OpenAI as hoping broader iPhone distribution could lead to paid-service signups. That is attributed reporting about private terms, not a public confirmation from either company.

The “exposure” framing is an interpretation of what OpenAI could gain from appearing inside Apple products. The Atlantic argued that OpenAI should be paying Apple for that exposure; its report also said an OpenAI spokesperson would not share the deal’s terms. That commentary does not establish that Apple received exposure as a contractual payment. The Atlantic’s analysis should be read as an argument about the strategic value of distribution, not evidence of a payment clause.

What does “exposure” mean in this deal?

Apple gave ChatGPT access to prominent software experiences used across its ecosystem. That could introduce the service to people who might not otherwise open ChatGPT, and the option to connect a paid account created a possible conversion path. Apple, in turn, added ChatGPT capabilities to its users’ experiences. These are plausible strategic benefits; the available reporting does not quantify their value.

  • Known: ChatGPT was integrated into specified Apple experiences, with account-free access and the option to link a paid ChatGPT account described at launch.
  • Reported, not officially confirmed: neither company paid the other for the iPhone integration, according to a source cited by The Information.
  • Not established: Apple-attributable signups or subscriptions, OpenAI’s cost to serve integrated requests, any revenue split, a later change to commercial terms, or a dollar value for the exposure.

Without those figures or the contract, it is not possible to say that exposure was worth a particular amount—or that it was economically equivalent to a cash payment.

How does privacy differ between account-free and linked-account use?

Apple’s privacy page, dated September 14, 2026, says a request and its attachments, plus limited contextual data such as time zone, country, device type, language, and feature used, may be sent to ChatGPT. Apple says IP addresses are obscured, while general location is provided for purposes that include fraud prevention and legal compliance. Apple’s current privacy explanation distinguishes account-free requests from those made with a connected ChatGPT account.

Using ChatGPT without connecting an account

OpenAI says it processes these interactions to provide a safe response and comply with applicable law. In this mode, OpenAI says it does not receive the user’s IP address, store requests, or use them to train its models. Apple says OpenAI must process the information to fulfill the request and not retain it or use it for training, except as required by law. Apple also says it collects limited operational information about request and response volume or size. See OpenAI’s Apple Intelligence FAQ for its explanation of the account-free mode.

Connecting a ChatGPT account

When a user connects an account, the account’s existing settings and OpenAI policies apply. Depending on those choices, interactions may be saved in chat history and may be used to improve services. OpenAI says users can control model improvement and use Temporary Chat in ChatGPT settings. Account-free privacy terms should therefore not be generalized to linked accounts; see OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.

Did the relationship change after the 2024 announcement?

Yes, the later context includes a legal dispute, but it does not resolve the earlier deal’s financial terms. In 2026, the Associated Press reported that Apple sued OpenAI, accusing it of trade-secret theft related to OpenAI’s hardware efforts. OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri responded that the company had “no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.” Those are attributed claims in litigation, not established findings. The AP described the relationship as having edged toward rivalry. The Associated Press report covers the dispute.

In separate litigation, Apple’s court filing described its ChatGPT integration as non-exclusive and quoted Apple’s intention to support other AI models. That is Apple’s position in a legal filing, not independent confirmation of every aspect of the current partnership. Neither development discloses or settles what the companies agreed financially in 2024. Apple’s filing provides that characterization.

What can be concluded about the deal?

Apple delivered ChatGPT distribution inside its software experiences; OpenAI gained a potential way to reach users and invite them to connect paid accounts. The companies did not disclose financial terms. A 2024 report said neither paid the other, while “exposure” remains a description of a possible strategic benefit—not a confirmed payment, a measured outcome, or a known valuation.
