Google’s September 2022 Search announcements aimed to make searching less dependent on typed keywords: Lens multisearch combined a photo with text, local multisearch added nearby intent, and other planned updates emphasized visual translation and topic exploration. These were announcements and rollout plans from 2022—not proof that every feature is available in every country today.
How do I search with a picture and words at the same time?
Google calls this feature multisearch. In the Google app, use Lens to take a picture or select a screenshot, then add words to refine what you want to find. The image supplies visual context; the text can specify a detail that is hard to describe or identify from the image alone. Google’s examples included asking for a green version of a pictured dress, a coffee table to match an image, or care instructions for a photographed plant.
Google introduced multisearch as a beta in English in the United States in April 2022. In its September 28, 2022 Search On announcement, Google said it was available in English globally and planned to expand to more than 70 languages in the following months. Those statements describe availability at the time, not the feature’s current language or regional support. See Google’s April introduction to multisearch and September 2022 announcement.
Can Google Lens find where to buy something near me?
Google announced “multisearch near me” as a way to combine an image and text with local intent—for example, looking for nearby businesses that offer a pictured item or dish. Google said in September 2022 that rollout in English in the United States would begin later that fall. In February 2023, it described local multisearch as available in English in the U.S. and said broader expansion was planned. These dated statements do not establish availability in a particular location today.

Can Google translate text in a photo?
Lens could already translate text in images; Google’s September 2022 announcement described work to make translated text blend more naturally into complex images, showing an example of translation over a photographed poster. Google presented that improvement as an upcoming launch, rather than a guarantee of what Lens currently does in every case.

Google reported in 2022 that people used Lens to translate images more than 1 billion times each month across more than 100 languages. It also said the blending process had been optimized to run in 100 milliseconds. These are Google’s own figures and technical claim from 2022, not current measurements or independent benchmark results. The announcement is at Search On 2022.
What else did Google announce for Search?
Google outlined a more exploratory experience intended to help people move from a broad interest to useful results. The announced directions included suggestions as a person types, prompts to refine a topic, visual stories and short videos, and related topics to explore. Google used travel research about cities in Mexico as an example. These were design directions and rollouts planned in the months after September 2022, not a single feature with a stated universal release date.
Prabhakar Raghavan, then a Google senior vice president, described the strategy as moving “far beyond the search box” toward more multidimensional search experiences. That is Google’s characterization of its own product direction. Read the company’s September 2022 explanation of its Search changes.

What to know before relying on a 2022 rollout announcement
- A launch announcement records what Google said at that time; it does not confirm present support for your language, country, or device.
- For local results, check whether the feature is offered in your location and whether the results show businesses relevant to your query.
- Google’s usage totals and speed figure are company-reported 2022 claims, not independent evaluations of accuracy or usefulness.
