If you want a handwriting-first alternative to Google Cursive on a Chromebook, try Squid. Its publisher lists Chromebook support, low-latency ink on Chromebooks, PDF markup, and exports to PDF and image formats. It also says notes are stored on your device without requiring an account. Those are publisher-described features, not the result of an independent comparison with Cursive.
Cursive itself remains in Google’s Chromebook guidance for touchscreen devices that work with a stylus. The right choice depends on whether you need handwriting and PDF annotation, Google-account sync, or a particular app to appear in your Chromebook’s stylus menu.
What makes Squid a practical alternative?
Squid is a handwriting-focused note-taking app available through Google Play. Its listing, updated August 21, 2026, says it supports Chromebooks and offers low-latency ink on Chromebooks. That is the publisher’s feature statement; it is not a measured claim that Squid is faster than Cursive.
The listing also describes tools for marking up PDFs, organizing notes in folders, importing images, moving selected content, and choosing paper backgrounds. It says notes are stored on-device without a required account or sign-in. You can export notes as PDF, PNG, JPEG, or Squid Note files, and back them up to a location you choose.

Should you switch from Google Cursive?
Not necessarily. Google’s current Cursive support page describes the app as a way to capture, edit, and organize handwritten notes on touchscreen Chromebooks that work with a stylus. Google says notes sync to your Google account, can be found in a Chrome browser, and can be exported as PDFs. The page also describes notebooks and editing gestures.

Cursive is a reasonable fit if it already works on your Chromebook and Google-account sync suits your needs. Squid is worth considering when PDF markup, device-stored notes without a required sign-in, or its described export formats better fit your workflow. These differences do not establish that one app is universally better.
How do the other Chromebook note-taking options compare?
Google’s Chromebook app recommendations list Google Keep, Evernote, Microsoft OneNote, Noteshelf, and Squid under “Take a note.” Google also points Cursive users to Keep on the web.

Check your Chromebook and stylus before installing or buying

- Look at the stylus app setting. On a supported Chromebook, open ChromeOS stylus settings and check the default note-taking app options. Squid’s setup guidance explains how to select it where supported; the page was last updated December 30, 2022, so check current ChromeOS settings too.
Choose based on sync, export, and account needs
The clearest practical distinction in the available feature descriptions is where notes are kept and how you can move them. Google says Cursive notes sync to your Google account and supports exporting a note as a PDF. Squid’s listing says its notes are stored on-device without a required sign-in and can be exported in several formats.
If your notes are important, decide how you will back them up before settling on an app. For Squid, the publisher says you can back up notes to a chosen location; for Cursive, Google describes account sync and PDF export. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, Google notes that Workspace users may need administrator help to sign in to Cursive.
