Google’s Quick Share redesign began as a feature spotted in beta code in April 2025, then was reported rolling out to Android phones by September. Google now describes a streamlined interface with clearer Send and Receive options, image previews and transfer progress—but it is available only on compatible devices, not every Android phone.

Is Google still testing the Quick Share redesign?

The story started on April 17, 2025, when Android Authority reported that Google Play Services beta 25.15.31 contained code for a proposed Quick Share interface. Because the report came from an APK teardown, its details described work in progress; Google could have changed or abandoned them before release.

By September 2, 2025, Android Central reported that the redesigned interface was gradually reaching Android phones. Google’s current Android features page now describes a redesigned Quick Share experience. The original headline’s “testing” refers to that early discovery, rather than establishing that the whole redesign remains only a test.

What changed in the Quick Share interface?

The clearest change is that sending and receiving have distinct entry points, instead of making users start from a landing screen oriented around settings. Google describes the current redesign as requiring fewer steps, showing image previews, making it easier to switch between sending and receiving, and tracking transfer progress. Those are Google’s product descriptions; the available sources do not establish measured usability gains or faster transfer speeds.

Area What the earlier interface preview showed What the redesign adds or emphasizes
Starting a task The prior experience was described as more landing- or settings-oriented; the beta preview did not establish every detail of the old interface. Separate Send and Receive options, with easy switching between them.
Choosing content The preview distinguished the new flow from the prior landing/settings-oriented experience, but did not document a complete old-versus-new picker comparison. A built-in file picker and previews for selected content, including multiple files in Android Central’s September 2025 report.
Transfer status Not established in the cited early preview. Google says users can track transfer progress.
Receiving visibility The April 2025 preview said opening Receive would expose the device name to nearby people and limit the profile image to contacts. These were provisional beta observations. Google’s current Help guidance says the device is visible to nearby people while Receive mode is active; leaving the screen ends that visibility.

The original preview also reported that tapping the Quick Share Quick Settings tile opened the receive screen. That was an observation in the beta teardown, not a guarantee that every current device behaves the same way. Android Central later described a full-screen layout with Send and Receive tabs, a built-in picker and previews. Its report said the layout mirrored Samsung One UI 8 and characterized rollout as gradual; it is not a current, complete device-compatibility list.

How to receive files with Quick Share

  1. Turn on Bluetooth. Google says both devices need Bluetooth enabled to receive.
  2. Open Quick Share and enter Receive mode. Keep the receiving device’s screen unlocked. The exact menu path can differ by device and Android version.
  3. Have the sender choose the content and select your device. A recipient may need to be in Receive mode to appear to the sender.
  4. Accept or decline the transfer when the request arrives.

These requirements and steps come from Google’s Quick Share Help. A transfer can continue if the sender leaves the screen; its status and a cancellation option are available from a notification. Simultaneous sharing to multiple receivers works only on selected device models. On other devices, requests queue.

Who can see your device while Quick Share is open?

While the device is in Receive mode, it is visible to people nearby. Leaving Receive mode stops that visibility. Google Help also describes visibility choices for the user’s own devices, contacts, and Everyone for 10 minutes. The temporary Everyone setting reverts to the previous choice after the 10-minute period. Use the narrower visibility option that fits the transfer, and exit Receive mode when you are done.

Menu names and available controls can vary. Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 13 and later; Galaxy devices running Android 10 with One UI 2.1 or later can have different settings and features. Quick Share is also available on Chromebooks and select Windows PCs through the Quick Share for Windows app.

Which devices have the redesign?

Google’s features page names compatible LE Audio Bluetooth headphones and select Samsung, Xiaomi and Pixel devices as availability examples. It does not list every supported model or country. Check your device’s software and the manufacturer’s current support information; the September 2025 report of a gradual phone rollout should not be treated as a definitive compatibility list.

  • AirDrop compatibility: In a May 12, 2026 announcement, Google said Quick Share/AirDrop compatibility was beginning with supported Pixel phones, with expansion planned for Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi and HONOR. These are rollout statements, not a promise that every model in those families supports the feature.
  • Tap to Share: In an August 12, 2026 announcement, Google said Tap to Share through Quick Share was available for Pixel 6 and newer. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 were announced as coming soon, with broader expansion planned by the end of 2026. The feature is described as letting compatible Android devices exchange contact information by being brought close together, or send photos and videos through the Share Sheet. It is not part of the earlier UI redesign.
