Apple Intelligence summarized a series of breakup texts as: “No longer in a relationship; wants belongings from the apartment.” The line came from a screenshot shared by software developer Nick Spreen in October 2024, according to Futurism’s report.
What did Apple AI say about the breakup texts?
Futurism reporter Maggie Harrison Dupré wrote on October 11, 2024, that Spreen shared the screenshot the day before and confirmed it was real. The report says the texts were roughly along the lines of: “I can’t believe you just did that, we’re done, I want my stuff.” Apple Intelligence reduced the exchange to a relationship status and a request to retrieve belongings.
Futurism also reported that Spreen told Ars Technica the summary added distance, which he did not necessarily consider a bad thing. He described the experience as “unreal and dystopian.” Those comments are quoted here as Futurism’s account of his interview.
What the anecdote does—and does not—show
The summary is striking because it turns an emotionally charged exchange into a concise, practical notification. That compression can strip away tone and context: a request about belongings becomes the defining detail, while the surrounding feelings disappear.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
But one reported screenshot cannot establish how often Apple Intelligence summarizes sensitive conversations this way, whether the summary was representative of the full exchange, or how users generally respond. It is an example of the tension between brevity and nuance, not a measured failure rate or a test of AI empathy.
How Apple message summaries fit into Apple Intelligence now
The 2024 screenshot is a historical example; Apple’s current feature documentation describes present-day availability. Apple Support’s page, published September 14, 2026, lists “Summaries in Mail and Messages” among Apple Intelligence features supported on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, and visionOS 26 and later. Availability depends on eligible devices, software, language, and region, and Apple cautions that support varies across those conditions. See Apple’s current compatibility and availability details.
