Apple temporarily suspended News & Entertainment notification summaries in beta software in January 2025, but the sources available do not establish the feature’s exact status in every current iOS release or region. Apple’s own guidance says to check important AI-generated information for accuracy.
What happened with Apple’s news summaries?
Apple Intelligence can condense long or stacked iPhone notifications into shorter summaries. In December 2024, a summary attributed to BBC News falsely said that Luigi Mangione had shot himself. The BBC complained to Apple about the error, which transformed a news alert into a false claim about a major criminal case. 9to5Mac reported the incident on December 13, 2024.
It was not the only problematic example reported at the time. Coverage also described a premature darts result involving Luke Littler and a false summary about Rafael Nadal. These examples show that errors occurred; they do not establish how often summaries were wrong or how many users saw them. The available reporting does not support treating “millions of users” as a measured count of people who received faulty summaries.
What Apple changed after the complaints
On January 6, 2025, Apple said it would further clarify when notification summaries had been generated by Apple Intelligence. TechCrunch also reported Apple’s advice that users report unexpected summaries. TechCrunch covered the response.

On January 17, Apple said that, in the latest beta releases of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, summaries for the News & Entertainment category would be temporarily unavailable. The Associated Press reported Apple’s statement as a temporary measure in those beta versions—not a permanent removal across all software. Read the Associated Press report.
Apple’s current iPhone support guide explains notification summaries and their controls, but that general guidance does not establish whether the specific News & Entertainment summary setting is available in every current operating-system release and region. Availability can change with software, language, and location, so check the settings on your device rather than assuming the beta suspension applies everywhere—or that the news category is enabled everywhere.

How to manage notification summaries on iPhone
Apple’s iOS 26 support guide gives this path for managing the feature:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Summarize Notifications.
- Turn summaries on or off, or choose which notifications to summarize.
The setting controls the summaries covered by your device’s current software. If a particular news-category option is absent, the guide does not establish why it is missing; availability may depend on software version, language, or region. Apple’s guide also describes notification prioritization and Reduce Interruptions Focus as related ways to manage what reaches your attention. See Apple’s current iPhone guide.

How to treat an AI-generated news alert
Apple’s support guidance is explicit: “Apple Intelligence uses generative models and outputs may vary. Check important information for accuracy.” That warning matters especially when a short summary makes a claim about a death, arrest, election result, public safety event, or other consequential news.
- Expand the notification or open the original publisher’s story before sharing or acting on a consequential claim.
- If a summary appears wrong, report it to Apple through the feedback options available on your device.
- If you do not want summaries, turn them off in Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications.
Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence?
Apple’s cited guidance names iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 or later among supported iPhone models, subject to language and regional restrictions. Compatibility can change as Apple updates its requirements; check the latest Apple compatibility guidance for your exact model and location. Buying a compatible iPhone makes the feature available where supported, but does not prevent summary errors.
